Explanatory notes

English Language (EL) refers to the acquisition of English as an additional language.

This unit standard may contribute to the New Zealand Certificate in English
Language (Level 2) [Ref: 1881]. It is at a level comparable to Common European
Framework of Reference high A2 – low B1.

All assessment activities must be conducted in English, which must not be the
candidate’s first language.

Assessment must be conducted in a supportive environment. Candidates may
request assistance to understand the requirements of the assessment tasks.

The assessor must be satisfied that the candidate can independently demonstrate
competence against the unit standard.

It is recommended that this assessment be conducted in conjunction with
assessment against other English Language unit standards at this level.

Candidates may use a bilingual and/or an English dictionary, but not electronic
devices.

Candidate’s writing competence must be assessed after they have been given the
opportunity to edit and proofread their work.

Candidate’s writing may contain inaccuracies, but errors must not obscure meaning.

For this unit standard, forms must:
i be approximately one-two pages each in length;
ii be relevant to everyday life eg leave, job application, enrolment;
iii include information given in sentences, abbreviations, and numbers;
iv require a paragraph response in part of both forms.

Candidate may refer to other documents to obtain information needed to complete
forms.
