People credited with this unit standard are able to participate in basic spoken personal exchanges (EL). Classification Languages > English Language Available grade Achieved Entry information Recommended skills and knowledge Unit 27986, Participate in very basic spoken personal exchanges (EL Foundation), or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills. Explanatory notes 1 English Language (EL) refers to the acquisition of English as an additional language. 2 This unit standard may contribute to the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 1) [Ref: 1880]. It is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference high A1 – low A2. 3 All assessment activities must be conducted in English, which must not be the candidate’s first language. 4 Assessment must be conducted in a supportive and familiar environment, in which the interlocutor repeats or rephrase questions, where necessary and affective barriers are minimised. Candidates may request assistance to understand the requirements of the assessment tasks. 5 The assessor must be satisfied that the candidate can independently demonstrate competence against the unit standard. 6 Two candidates may be assessed simultaneously, but each candidate must fulfil the requirements of the unit standard independently. Candidate’s speech may be hesitant with pauses, single words or short phrases, and may follow learnt formulas. 9 For the purposes of moderation, the assessment must be recorded audio-visually. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Participate in basic spoken personal exchanges (EL). Range three spoken personal exchanges, each in a different context, assessed on separate occasions; topics may include but are not limited to – nationality, family, preferences, work, home, contact details. Evidence requirements 1.1 Conventions of basic spoken personal exchanges are used in a manner appropriate to social conversation, context, and participants. Range 1.2 Basic personal questions are asked, using learnt language patterns. Range 1.3 greeting, establishing eye contact, leave taking, common courtesies. minimum of five questions. Responses given to basic personal questions convey personal information.
