You will need to have a contingency plan in place should any extraordinary occurrences happen. For instance, if a tangihanga occurs it will take precedence over anything that may already be booked at the marae, a natural disaster could prevent the marae from being used, and human error of double booking could well happen. Your contingency plan will mean you have planned for success. Explain procedures for conducting tours on a marae. When organising an event on a marae, consultation with tangata whenua is of the utmost importance. By doing so, you are showing respect for them and providing the opportunity for them to be involved. Following this process will provide you with the opportunity of working alongside the tangata whenua ensuring tikanga and kawa (protocols and processes) are being adhered to in the correct and proper manner. To ensure this happens you will need to organise a hui with the marae committee to discuss your intentions of having a marae tour. This will enable you to plan and work alongside the committee to make it successful. (Evidence of consultation with marae committee is required). Things to discuss with the marae committee/tangata whenua: Name of tour, dates, duration, number of people attending and who they are, the purpose for the event, and budget. The responsibilities of tangata whenua and manuhiri are discussed as well as the tikanga and kawa for kai wero, kai karanga, kai kōrero, kai waiata, ringawera kaitautoko etc. Plan to succeed: Discuss alternative options and put a contingency plan in place. Your plan will look very similar if not the same as the first but may include another venue, human resources i.e. kaumātua, kaikaranga, kaiwero etc due to it being held at another marae etc. Kia kaha and all the best!
