Sheridan preparing for first faculty recital
Never underestimate the melodic charms of the clarinet.
Dr. Daniel Sheridan knows all about the instrument’s appeal and this week the first-year Cameron
University professor will build his début faculty recital around this simple, but classically elegant woodwind.
Sheridan’s recital will take place at 8 p.m. Thursday in the McCutcheon Recital Hall, located in Cameron’s
Louise D. McMahon Fine Arts Complex in Lawton.
“This will be my first solo recital since joining the music faculty here at Cameron,” Sheridan said. “I’m very
excited to be a part of the excellent faculty recital series that has become a tradition here at the university.”
Accompanied by CU music professor Dr. Hyunsoon Whang on the piano, Sheridan will present classic
musical works by Brahms, Osborne, Bozza, Pierne and Resanovic.
“I was looking to create a balance of works from a variety of time periods, composers, genres, and
nationalities,” Sheridan said of his selections. “The first half of the program will feature the Brahms Sonata
in E-flat for clarinet and piano, one of the great standards in the clarinet repertoire. The second half will
open with an unaccompanied piece by American composer Willson Osborne. I will then be joined by Dr.
Whang once again for a pair of French character pieces by Bozza and Pierne.”

Sheridan said the final musical choice composed by Nikola Resanovic, a colleague of his when he taught at
the University of Akron-Ohio, will be a crowd favorite.
The Resanovic selection will find Sheridan playing along side a digital audiotape of sampled electronic
sounds such as dial tones, satellite transmissions and fax machine modems.
“The digital audio tape allows the performer to bring in nontraditional sounds that are not normally available
in a recital setting,” Sheridan said. “While the sonic makeup of the piece is very modern in texture, the
Balkan and Macedonian dance rhythms which permeate the piece create a folk-like character. It’s a fun
piece to perform.”
A native of Houston, Sheridan is active as a soloist, orchestral musician and teacher. He has concretized
extensively throughout the Midwest and has performed with the South Bend Symphony (Indiana), the
Akron Symphony (Ohio), the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, the Canton Civic Opera (Ohio) and the Tulsa Ballet
Orchestra.
Sheridan has also served on the music faculties of the University of Akron, the College of Wooster and the
State University of New York-Stony Brook.
Tickets for Sheridan’s faculty recital are $6 for adults and $4 for students, senior citizens and military. CU
students are admitted free by presenting a current university identification card at the door.
