Cameron University faculty member featured
in national Phi Kappa Phi training DVD
Cameron University faculty member Sylvia M. Burgess was among a cast of Phi Kappa Phi volunteers
featured in the honor society’s first chapter officer training DVD.
Burgess is the dean of the CU School of Business and is immediate past-president of the university’s
chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, a national interdisciplinary honor society for professors and college students. As
president of the chapter, she serves on the society’s national investment committee.
The DVD, “Focus on Success: Chapter Operations and Memorable Initiations,” was created to aid chapter
officers of Phi Kappa Phi in areas such as increasing acceptance rates, conducting meaningful initiation
ceremonies and managing successful chapters.
“Sylvia’s participation in the DVD will help hundreds of chapter officers to benefit from her experience,”
stated Dr. Perry Snyder, executive director of Phi Kappa Phi. “She brought to “Focus on Success” large
measures of enthusiasm, and her commitment to honor and excellence is obvious for all to see.”
Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest, largest and most selective
interdisciplinary honor society. Each year, approximately 34,000 students, faculty, professional staff and
alumni are initiated into the society. Its chapters are on nearly 300 campuses in the U.S., Puerto Rico and
the Philippines.

The society’s mission is “to recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education
and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.” Consistent with that mission, Phi Kappa Phi
awards more than $500,000 annually to qualifying members through graduate and undergraduate
scholarships, member and chapter awards and grants for local and national literacy initiatives.
Burgess holds bachelor’s degree from Cameron, a juris doctorate from the University of Oklahoma’s School
of Law and an LL.M. in taxation from Southern Methodist University. She has been a faculty member at CU
