ENGL201 Socratic Seminar Assignment ASSIGNMENT Six times during the semester, our class will engage in a Socratic Seminar, a structured way to have a dialogue about a text or texts. During these seminar days, class will be divided into two groups – one group of 10 students will act as speakers and another group of 10 will act as listeners. Each student will be a speaker three times and a listener three times. The speakers will engage in thoughtful discussion based on questions they have prepared on the assigned reading. The listeners will observe the discussion, make notes on the discussion, and evaluate the speakers on their work. Failure to complete any of the listed requirements, as well as being unprepared (not having completed the reading) for a seminar will result in a failing grade for that seminar. Speakers will be graded by the listeners, but I reserve the right to adjust the speaker’s grades up or down per my discretion. Listeners will be graded by me based on my observations during seminar day as well as the honest and objective completion of the seminar rubric and summary. Listeners should be careful to show that they have done the assigned readings as well on the completed summaries.
