General Education Outcome Assessment Summary Form
For this assessment cycle (Spring semester, Area C), General Education Area C course faculty are asked to describe how
they are now assessing outcomes in their GE courses. The purpose of this request is 1) to encourage faculty to reflect on
their students’ success in absorbing the basic principles and content of GE courses and 2) to ensure that multiple sections of
one GE course all share the same general teaching objectives and that they are assessing those objectives.
Please use this form to summarize what you are doing to assess the GE outcomes and how well the students are achieving
these outcomes. You are also asked to describe any action you are planning based on the assessment findings.

1. Students will explain the historical and cultural significance of the major phenomena
within the period(s) and region(s) studied.
Describe one or two strategies you used to assess how well students achieved this outcome.
Potential strategies:
 A series of one-two paragraph reflective papers about class concepts—graded on 3 levels of
comprehension.
 Essay questions on an examination.
 Invented dialogues, debates graded on how adequately concepts were addressed.
 Ethical dilemma—have students take a position in an ethical issue then explain/justify the
position.
Describe how well students achieved the outcome, i.e. how many achieved at various levels.
Based on your assessment findings, what changes (if any) have you made or do you plan to make
in the course.
2. Students will compare and contrast the basic values of the people/cultures studied.
Describe one or two strategies you used to assess how well students achieved this outcome.
Potential Strategies
The same strategies as above. Could combine both outcomes into these strategies

Area C – 2 Introduction to the Arts Learning Outcomes
1. Students will explain the importance of one area of performance art in the wider field of
all arts

Potential Strategies:
 Essay test question
 Portfolio of art products including reflections about importance-- graded by rubric
 Brief reflective papers graded on 3 levels of quality—depth, complexity, creativity.
 Written assignment involving an analysis of importance, or history of the art.
Describe how well students achieved the outcome, i.e. how many achieved at various levels.
Based on your assessment findings, what changes (if any) have you made or do you plan to make
in the course.
2. Students will explain the contributions of one area of performance art to the cultural
heritage of the United States.
Describe one or two strategies you used to assess how well students achieved this outcome.
Potential Strategies:
 Essay test question(s)
 Portfolio of art products including reflections or analysis of related to heritage/history/the art-- graded by rubric
 Brief reflective papers graded on 3 levels of quality—depth, complexity, creativity.
 Written assignment involving an analysis of contributions to the arts.
 Could probably do an analysis type of short answer or multiple choice question

Area C – 3 Introduction to the Humanities Learning Outcomes
1. Students will identify and explain the principal values and/or traditions reflected in one
area of emphasis within this category.

 A series of one-two paragraph reflective papers about class concepts—graded on 3 levels of
comprehension.

1. Apply processes of critical analysis to the text-based courses within this category.

 Series of brief reflective analyses or comparative papers. Could also be one comprehensive
written assignment.
 Essay questions on an examination.
 Invented dialogues, or debates graded on how adequately concepts were addressed.
 Critique development
Describe how well students achieved the outcome, i.e. how many achieved at various levels.

2. Demonstrate basic skills in the performance courses within this category.

 Identify some critical requirements or primary traits or qualities that can be observed in
performance or in an artistic product. Develop and use a rubric to assess
