Directions: After answering question #1, please read “Learning How to Die in the Anthropocene" in The
Best American Science and Nature Writing (page 231). Use methods discussed in NSM 21 to take notes
while reading. When you are finished, answer questions #2 – 4 below. Your answers should be directly
typed into this document, printed out, and then brought to class.
1. Take about 10 minutes and type up everything you know related to the topic of climate change.
Don’t worry about writing complete sentences; just write down whatever thoughts come to mind.
2. Define the term Anthropocene as laid out in the article “Learning How to Die in the Anthropocene.”
3. The author suggests that if climate change continues unabated, life might look like a scene from the
Iraq war or from Hurricane Katrina. Outline some of the potential scenarios that are described in
the article.
4. The author writes on page 234, “The greatest challenge the Anthropocene poses may be to our
sense of what it means to be human.” What does this statement mean to your personally?
