SHOLARSHIP
SCHOLARLY AND CREATIVE ACHIEVEMENT
GOAL: To build and support a university community whose excellence in
teaching, learning, research, and public service will be strengthened by
scholarship.
Goal: To build and support a university community whose excellence in teaching,
learning, research and public service will be strengthened by the faculty’s
scholarly and creative achievements.
Excellent s Scholarship Scholarly and creative achievement is multifaceted and broadly defined.
It includes the traditional discovery of knowledge and integration of this knowledge across
disciplines. As well, s Scholars display the capacity to synthesize and look for new relationships,
new patterns of meaning, new ways of knowing and they embrace the challenge of applying
knowledge to the problems of society. They Most importantly In addition, scholars acknowledge
that excellent teaching requires substantive scholarship inquiry not only into one's own
discipline but also into the art and science of teaching fosters teaching excellence.
These forms of scholarly and creative activity reflect the concepts in Ernest L. Boyer’s
Scholarship Reconsidered (1990): scholarship of discovery, scholarship of integration,
scholarship of application, and scholarship of teaching.
Thise pursuit of knowledge through scholarship scholarly and creative activity complements and
enhances the teaching mission of this University and enriches the learning community. The
process of discovering, synthesizing, and applying knowledge is indispensable to the intellectual
and institutional quality of CSUS. Scholarship This scholarly and creative achievement is the
"glue" that holds the University together; it is at the center of student learning. Creativity and
innovation are central values of the University and are reflected through the many forms of faculty
and student scholarly and creative activities scholarship.
To support these various expressions of scholarship scholarly and creative activity, the University
must take a flexible approach, providing opportunities for faculty to work on a wide range of
scholarly and creative activities, building on their individual strengths, and realizing their own
special contributions to the University mission. Scholarship Scholarly and creative activity at
CSUS can be may offer an opportunity for a dynamic interface within the University through
interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research and creative activities. Faculty should be
encouraged to diversify and grow intellectually and to share their experience with colleagues and
students, and they. To achieve these scholarly and creative outcomes, faculty must be assisted
to sustain professional currency and vitality throughout their professional lives.
The University's strengths in information technology must become a powerful resource on which
to build our faculty and student scholarly and creative enterprise. An integrated communication
infrastructure connecting colleges of the university with one another and to external databases is
essential to scholarship scholarly and creative achievement in many fields.
CSUS is committed to extending its scholarly and creative resources to the surrounding area to
provide faculty and student leadership in addressing regional needs. Particular attention should
be given to issues of concern to the state capital community as CSUS continues its leadership
role in developing links between the University and the capital.
A greater sensitivity to capital and regional social issues will be evident as scholarly activities
more systematically respond to external needs for information and questions of practically
application and creative expression. In the process, students will become more aware of these
issues and be better prepared to participate as citizens.
The University, as a learning community, can be used as part of a living, learning laboratory for
faculty, students, staff, and community members. This powerful coalition of people has the
potential to create an environment which that examines, and poses solutions to, problems of the
region and enhances the image and intellectual climate of the campus.
CSUS will strive to become a model of scholarly and creative achievement for regional
comprehensive universities. Constituencies in the region will look to CSUS for currency in
curricula, as a resource for the knowledge needed to keep pace with a rapidly changing society,
and as the center of academic excellence. Students will choose CSUS knowing they will acquire
useful fundamental skills and knowledge to live in a pluralistic global society. The learning
community will take pride in thrive on the increased collaboration, communication, and
competence that result from faculty and student scholarly and creative activities. Our The
