MLA Formatting Instructions

1.

Open a Word Document.

2.

Change the font of the entire document to Times New Roman.

3.

Go to the Insert Tab on the top of the menu.

4.

Click on Page number, then select “Top of Page”.

5.

Choose the “Plain Number 3” option.

6.

Hit the space bar and then type your last name. Make sure there is a space between your last name and the page number. This should appear on every page.

7.

Change the font type to Times New Roman.

8.

Close the header by typing below the blue line.

9.

Type your First and Last Name on the left side of the page, not in the header.

10.

Enter and type “Mrs. Rodgers”.

11.

Enter and then type “English III” and your class period (ex. 1 st period).

12.

Enter again and type the date in day month year format (see above).

13.

Enter again then go to the paragraph tab on the menu and click on the arrow in the bottom right corner, and when the menu pops up go to spacing, change to double.

14.

Numbers 10-13 should only appear on page 1.

15.

Also change the after to 0 instead of the default 10.

16.

Then Click on the tab to center your title (2 nd one).

17.

Hit enter again and change to left align (1 st one).

18.

Tab once and begin typing your introduction. Remember to tab once at the beginning of each new paragraph.

Your paragraph should look like this. Put the title of the play The Crucible in italics when you use it in your introduction. Whenever you quote from the play, be sure to use “quotation marks.” Be sure to cite after each quote (Hawthorne 152). Close the quotation marks “before the citation”

(Hawthorne 122). All paragraphs should start and end with your own words, so there should be no citations and the ends of paragraphs. Your paper should be at least one typed page when you finish.
