(2) Make valid inferences from numerical, graphical and symbolic information. (3)Apply mathematical reasoning to both abstract and applied problems, and to both scientific and non-scientific problems. Prerequisites: MATH 009,and the Intermediate Algebra Diagnostic Test (IAD). You must have an IAD test score of 27 or better to stay in the class(Department policy, no exceptions.). All students are required to show their scores by Tuesday, February 2 to avoid being dropped from course. However, students who didn't score 27 or better should drop themselves from the course. Please read the homework section below for additional textbook information. Writing Component: This is a general education course (as appeared in B4). It includes a writing component. You can expect to write frequently throughout the semester. In homework, and exams, you will be asked to explain in writing. No calculator swapping is permitted during exams. A graphing calculator will be used for demonstration in this course. Homework and Quizzes: The homework problems will be assigned and must be submitted through the online homework system “Webassign”. It requires you have access of a computer with internet connection. Typically hw will be due midnight Tuesdays and Saturdays. The hw deadline is not negotiable (more details in Q&A). An access code is required for a semester long access into Webassign. The semester fee is $82 which includes the ebook and can be paid online when you log in OR you may buy a paper copy textbook bundled with a homework access code. Steps to create Homework account. 1. Go to the Homework website: http://webassign.net/ 2. Self enroll by clicking on the button "I have a class Key", then follow the steps to create your own username and password. 3. If a student misses one midterm with a valid excuse, then proportionally 22/24 of the final exam grade will replace the midterm grade. Missed Exam without a valid excuse will receive 0..A valid excuse is a doctor’s note, school official note or evidence of family emergency which must be presented to the instructor no later than the next class after the missed midterm to guarantee the grade replacement. Attendance: regular attendance is essential to pass this class; and it is considered mandatory. I will assume that any announcements made in class are heard and comprehended by all. For that reason you are responsible for obtaining class notes and stopping by my office hours with specific questions should you miss a lecture. Your cell phones should be silenced and off your desk during class. Needing Special Accommodations & Retention of Graded Materials: If you have a documented disability and wish to discuss academic accommodations, please contact me as soon as possible during the first week of class. In the event of a question regarding an exam grade or final grade, it will be the responsibility of the student to retain and present graded materials which have been returned for student possession. ACADEMIC HONESTY: All students are expected to maintain the highest standards of honesty and integrity in every phase of their academic careers. Academic honesty and mutual respect (student with student and instructor with student) are expected in this course. Mutual respect includes being on time for class and not leaving early, being prepared to give full attention to class work, and not looking at another student's work during exams. The penalties for academic dishonesty are severe and ignorance is not an acceptable defense. For more information, please visit the website below: http://www.csus.edu/umanual/AcademicHonestyPolicyandProcedures.htm Finally, key to success in this class—Attend every class, do all assigned homework on time, and actively working on worksheets! Q&A Notes and handouts can be printed from SacCT account at http://www.csus.edu/sacct/ The hw deadline is firm. However if you missed any homework deadline, all homework will be reopened again 10 days before the final exam week from May 6 to midnight May 15. You may do missed hw on paper and enter answers when it's reopened for full credit. STDUENTS WHO FINISH A HW ASSIGNMENT EARLY BY 24 HRS WILL GET 10% EXTRA POINTS ON THAT ASSIGNMENT. HW questions: if you have questions doing your homework, you can use help online, come to professor office hours, tutoring hours or in BRH118. Please don't email homework questions. IF YOU EXPERIENCE TECHNICAL PROBLEMS WITH HOMEWORK, YOU SHOULD CALL THE TECH SUPPORT AS LISTED ON THE HOMEWORK PAGE. IN VERY RARE CASES(once or twice), THE SYSTEM GRADES A CORRECT ANSWER AS INCORRECT, MOST OTHER TIMES, IT'S LIKELY A STUDENT MISTAKE. Each student will receive an adjustment of credit of 0.1pts (equivalent to two hw problems) to take into consideration of possible incorrect grading. Any adjustment to this syllabus will be announced in class.
