Dr. Richard A. Orem Professor A member of the faculty at NIU since 1978, Richard Orem holds a joint appointment between the departments of Literacy and Counseling, Adult and Higher Education at NIU where he specializes in preparing teachers of English as a second language. His teaching and research interests have focused on the areas of teaching English as a second language to adults. Dissertations he has directed have drawn from topics such as community college presidents and their impact on institutional culture, cross-cultural integration of adult English language learners, internationalizing community college curricula, the role of technology in nursing education, beliefs and attitudes of Chinese English language learners, patterns of persistence among adult students in higher education, and the learning patterns of academic leaders within higher education institutions. Prof. Orem has extensive international experience, having lived or taught in Tunisia, Italy, Finland, China, and South Korea. He feels “Adult education encourages personal and intellectual growth. The most meaningful aspect of my work is witnessing the transformations that occur within adult learners as they develop their own analyses of the field of practice”.
