Accessible Technology Initiative ATI- Captioning Student Assistant
The ATI Captioning Student Assistant works closely with and under the supervision of the ATI
Instructional Materials Specialist. The student assistant will be assigned to work on various
captioning projects throughout the semester and will be responsible for reviewing and adhering
to captioning recommendations. In this position, Captioning is the process of converting audio
content from a video, audio or other applicable production into text and displaying that text
along with the video or audio content. The captioned media that are produced are used to
address the needs of deaf or hard of hearing students enrolled in courses that utilize
audio/visual content. The position is expected to work 15 to 20 hours per week during the
academic semester. Upon being hired, training is provided in each of the areas listed below.
Duties and Responsibilities:
 Caption various types of media files including video and audio files.
 Digitize and convert media files into various formats as applicable.
 Produce and Edit caption files to be used for captioned video
 Use ticketing system, ServiceNow, to receive, review and track any Captioning Service
requests.
 Use video editing equipment, digitization software and video editors as needed
 Use Docsoft Web Interface to Upload video content and obtain Transcripts.
 Edit Docsoft Generated transcripts using the DocSoft Transcript Editor.
 Create hyperlinks or generate embed code to be used to link to captioned videos
 Create and maintain captioning project timelines for each project assigned
 Use Automatic Sync Technologies CaptionSync Captioning Vendor account to upload
video/audio content to be used for courses where a student with a disability is enrolled
 Download completed transcripts from AST system to Captioning work folder on campus
media server.
 Move media/transcript/caption files to appropriate locations on media server for
effective playback of captioned video
 Actively participate in captioning research projects as assigned
 Adhere to captioning best practices and recommendations
 Participate in training to stay current on captioning procedures and recommendations
 Report any issues or questions to the Instructional Materials Specialist or other
appropriate staff
Minimum Qualifications:
 Comprehensive knowledge of the English language, including grammatical structures,
syntax, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation.
 Good writing skills
 Responsible and dependable.
 Attention to detail and adheres to deadlines
 Ability to work well with various people including students, faculty, staff, and high-level
administrators.
 Motivated, innovative, and shows initiative.

Proficiency with multiple computer platforms and operating systems (MacIntosh, PC,
Win XP/7, MacOS
 Knowledge using media players such as Real Player, QuickTime, and Windows Media
Player
 Proficiency with SacLink applications (e.g. OWA) and Saclink utilities.
 Proficiency with communication software and internet applications (e.g. Web browsers,
FTP, encoding software)
 Proficiency with Microsoft Office Programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access
program
Beneficial Qualifications:
 Familiarity with Captioning Software
 Familiarity with video editing software
