Presentation #2: Debate Team Due: Week 10, 3/27 Having chosen from a list of topics covered in class, students teams are paired to debate opposing viewpoints. Ultimately, students have to choose the perspective they believe, effectively defend those beliefs, or attempt to reconcile opposing viewpoints. The project has assigned readings to help students prepare for the debate. These are some sample topics, others will be selected by the class based on course material on 3/25 during a class discussion. What is a Debate? A debate is basically a timed argument with rules. Debates can be conducted one on one, or in teams. A judge or panel determines the winners. Debate topics are not known ahead of time, but students may prepare via readings prior to the debate. A topic is chosen, and teams, based on a coin toss, will select pro and con positions. Teams may select one student to speak for the team, or speak in turn, and present their positions. Each team will present one rebuttal. Format: 10 minutes per debate 1. Topic announced, coin toss for choice of pro/con argument. 2. Teams have 3 minutes to prepare argument. 3. “Pro” team has 2 minutes to present argument “for”. 4. “Con” team has 2 minutes to present argument “against”. 5. “Pro” team offers 1 minute rebuttal 6. “Con” team offers 1 minute rebuttal. 7. Class determines winner based on raise of hands. 8. Discussion.
