1st Week
Review Chapter One in “Understanding Art”, 8th edition. The first
assignment will be a Black/White/Grey Design taken from a picture in
the magazine. Explanation and examples given. Correct method of
painting will be demonstrated. Buy a sketchbook: 9x12 or 12x18. Due

2nd Week
Review Chapter Two on Visual Images doing a project using one
primary color and black/white. Due on __________. Bring in 5 different
styles of lettering. Always have a #2 Pencil!
3rd Week
Review Chapter Three on Principles of Design. The project is using 5
different styles of letters using one of your initials 5 different ways.
Use your sketchbook to practice the lettering. Project due on __________.
Draw a plant in your sketchbook.
4th Week
Select a favorite “Quote” that identifies you. Take one of the styles of
lettering you used on the previous assignment. Review Chapter Four.
Continue to draw household items in your sketchbook. Project due on
__________. Visit CSUN Art Gallery to see the Hans Burkhardt Collection.
2 page paper reviewing the show due _________.
5th Week
Review Chapter Five on drawing. Using your sketchbook, you will
draw 5 still-life objects. You will need your #2 pencil and others will
be available. Taking these 5 objects, you will create your own a still
life. Due ________
6th Week
Draw a self-portrait using a mirror at home. Life drawing will occur in
class. Finished project will be done in class. We will use colored
pencils and pastels. Due _________. Practice drawing life characters in
your sketchbook.
7th Week
Take your completed portrait using tracing paper to make a new
image of yourself. You will use one of the styles of a famous artist to
do this rendering. Collaging techniques will be used along with found
objects. Review Chapters 1-5 for the midterm next week.
8th Week
Midterm ___________. Need a GREEN Book only. Turn in sketchbooks for
grading. Finish all work assigned to date. Bring nature pieces i.e:
leaves, dried flowers, bark, grass. Continue drawing in your
sketchbook.
9th Week
With your nature pieces & a view finder, you will draw three pieces
3x5, 6x9, 9x12 using colored pencils. Due _________. Gesso a piece of
cardboard 12x16 or larger.
10th Week
You will paint a picture in the style of one of the artists from the book.
Painting will be with Acrylic paints and is due _________. Review
Chapter Six.
11th Week
Review Chapter Seven. Begin the print making process. There will be
two projects issued in class. Continue to draw in your sketchbook.
Visit CSUN gallery doing 2-page review of the show. Due __________.
12th Week
SPRING BREAK
13th Week
Continue to work on the second print-making project.
14th Week
Past projects need to be completed. Gallery Paper due.
15th Week
Review Chapter Twenty on page 495. OP art piece to be completed in
class. Gesso a bottle for next week. Turn in sketchbook for grading.
16th Week
Gesso the bottle with a theme of “Absolut You” Painting in the round!
17th Week
