Job Description
Role and Responsibilities
This unpaid internship involves working with the producer of the City of DeKalb Government Access Cable Channel
14 to develop, improve and broaden the currently available programming as well as work to expand the available
choices of programming, in accordance within the guidelines of GATV as set forth by the FCC as well as the City of
DeKalb and it’s authorized cable provider as currently defined.
This is a live, working television station. Your work will be seen by many viewers and will be available to you to
include in your work / education experience portfolio. This is a great opportunity to get real-world, hands on
experience in many different aspects of television production and broadcast that normally would not be available
in such a short period of time to one individual.
What you do and how you do it will affect others. We believe that specific and defined training at one particular
aspect of your career is always enhanced by the general knowledge of what the rest of the team is doing. That
being said, we strongly believe that you will leave here with a greater understanding of the many aspects of your
chosen profession.
You will be working with professional grade equipment and editing / production software. Proper care and
treatment of city owned property and systems is expected at all times.
As an intern with the City of DeKalb GATV, you will actively participate in the following:

Broadcast and Production of live content-(City Council Meetings and Plan/Zone Commission Meetings)
City Council meetings are held the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month beginning at 5:00 p.m. with pre and
post broadcast responsibilities. Plan/Zone Commission meetings are held the 2 nd and 4th Wednesday of
each month (as necessary), and begin at 6:00 p.m. again with pre and post broadcast responsibilities.
Other additional assignments in the field may require evenings (after regular business hours).
Live broadcasts will involve the following duties:

Camera operator

Pre broadcast CG creation and live CG production

Audio technician / engineering

Graphics coordinator / creation

Post broadcast DVD creation for archiving

Post broadcast video creation for web site on-demand placement

Other duties as assigned.
Other
1.
Compose, film, and produce PSA’s and other content as directed in studio and in the field.
2.
“Green Screen” video production, including 3 point lighting set-up.
3.
Creation of virtual sets.
4.
Assist in the creative process of proposing new and appropriate programming content.
Qualifications and Education Requirements

Currently enrolled in a degree or certificate program at NIU with emphasis on television
broadcast/communications/electronic media.

Basic knowledge of mass communications.

Strong communication and human relation skills.

Ability to work behind and in front of the camera.

Familiarity with on-screen skills such as positioning/eye contact/hand gesturing/etc.

Video production experience-prefer actual course work experience.

Basic knowledge of photography and videography along with associated editing skills.

Ability to work unsupervised.

Reliable transportation in order to complete field assignments.

Availability to work the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month from 3:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (end time varies)
and the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 5:45 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (when meetings are not
cancelled. End time varies.) along with other flexible times during the week in order to compile the
required average of hours as determined necessary by Northern Illinois University for this internship.
(currently 10 to 15 hours per week during Fall and Spring sessions.) (Summer sessions – inquire with
internship coordinator at NIU.)
Preferred Skills
General understanding of Adobe Creative Suite Software or similar video editing systems in a Windows
environment.
Good understanding of video camera operation, audio production, and still camera use (dslr).
NOTE:
To constructively participate you must realize this is many times a deadline driven occupation.
Dependability and the ability to work as a team is imperative.
While your internship is active, you will be seen as a representative of the City of DeKalb.
Proper and respectful treatment of all you interact with is a must.
