EXPANDING LOGIC TO INCLUDE SENTENTIAL LOGIC Example of deductive argument: 1. Sasha went to Jamba Juice and spent over $100 at Albertsons. 2. If Sasha spent over $100 at Albertsons then Sasha won a free Jamba Juice card. Sasha won a free Jamba Juice card. 1. Is the argument valid? (Categorical Logic doesn’t show it to be valid.) 2. We create Sentential Logic (in which the smallest unit is the sentence that expresses an atomic claim – the assertion of one fact). 3. Look at each sentence, circle each atomic sentence. 4. What words are left out? These words are the glue that create compound sentences out of atomic sentences (sentence connectives). 5. Sentence connectives are also logical operators, words every computer can understand. Example: Google search 6. Identify what kind of compound claim each premise is (conjunction and conditional). 7. Identify parts of conjunction – asserting both claims (conjuncts) are true. 8. Identify parts of conditional (condition or antecedent, result or consequent).
