Performance Assessment – Level 3 Theme(s): Cultural Diversity / Self Identity Unit: Barriers Essential Question: What barriers does society impose on us? Speaking Assessment: Create and present a skit in which a diverse group of students must spend a full day in detention together. (“Breakfast Club” type situation) In the skit the students have to discuss racial, ethnic, and gender stereotypes. In the end they realize what they have in common. Role-play a situation in which you interview a recently arrived immigrant from the target culture. Ask him/her questions about his/her experience. Writing Assessment: Compose questions for the interview in which you ask a recently arrived immigrant from the target culture. Include questions about their cultural heritage, their values, beliefs, and norms at home and at school. Write an article for the school newspaper. In this article your interview of a newly arrived immigrant will be featured. The article should include what you learned about how the immigrant behaves at home versus at school and what kind of social barriers the student faces. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Theme(s): Family and Community Unit: Love and Friendship Essential Question: How is love and friendship expressed throughout the world and how does it influence the individual? Speaking Assessment: Select a personal add and make your first contact via phone. Plan your first outing. Writing Assessment: Write you own personal add looking for your special someone. Speaking Assessment: Interview a famous artist. Ask what made him/her create this piece of art and what affect he/she hoped this piece would have on everyday life. Speaking Assessment: Present a skit in which you and your friends are driving and the driver pulls out his/her cellphone to text. Discuss how texting has influenced society. Teacher provides visuals of how media influences society (dangers of texting and driving, etc.). The group will tell a story based on the picture. Groups share their stories with other groups. The listening group has to create a set number of questions to expand on the story. What motivates us? Speaking Assessment: You are visiting with your doctor because you don’t feel well. Present your symptoms to your doctor. Discuss how to prevent future illness by making positive lifestyle choices. Writing Assessment: You just received an email from a friend. Your friend reveals that he/she has an eating disorder. Writing Assessment: Write a journal entry in which you talk about your desire to have plastic surgery. Why do you think you need it? What are the risks involved? Written assessment: Create a flyer promoting the cultural diversity event. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Theme(s): Global Issues Unit: Poverty and Famine Essential Question: What causes poverty and famine and how can it be prevented? Speaking Assessment: Teacher provides a visual/listening prompt depicting poverty or famine in a target language country. Students describe the picture and make connections to what they have seen or experienced in their own lives. Writing Assessment: Create a brochure in which you inform the public about ways to break the cycle of poverty.
