Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica Capitulo “Lázaro de Tormes”
Initiation Ritual
President: Members, old and new, of this Hispanic Society, greetings! We are gathered here for the initiation of
this group of students who have shown and proven a deep interest in the beautiful Spanish language. Let us listen
to our Secretary who will give us a short summary of the history and purposes of our society.
Secretary: This Spanish Honor Society was founded by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and
Portuguese in 1953, for the students of North American secondary schools; the name of this chapter is Lázaro de
Tormes, our colors are red and gold. Our insignia and seal are those of our mother association.
(The students will start lining up. Candles will be handed out to the candidates as they take their position in the
side of our library)
Pres. (very slowly): Now we are going to be quite… This is our initiation, serious and significant. Let all listen
carefully… This is our mother candle. It serves us each year. It represents inspiration.
Sec. :As an example of this inspiration, let us repeat the words or the poet Nuñez de Arce, who wrote the poem,
іEXCELSIOR! All together!
“Why do humble spirits, why do lonely souls,
In the fierce combats of life, neither struggle nor resist?
іThe human spirit is more constant the more it rises!
God put mud on land, and he put the rock on the mountains.
The white snow, which in deep valleys melts away slowly,
On the high peaks remains unchangeable and eternal.”
Pres: Each has a candle in his/her hand. This symbolizes our course of life. Thus, without burning, it exists but does
not live. That candle is saying: “If they burn me, I live; if not, I die.” May our lives never be candles unburned! (The
ushers now go to the mother candle and assist in lighting the candidates’ candles.) Now each of you, in turn, will
receive the symbolic flame of the mother candle, the flame which symbolizes with its heat the inspiration toward
high ideals. (Light the candles)
You will repeat the oath of society, phrase by phrase:
“As a member of Lázaro de Tormes Chapter, I promise to devote myself to the study of the Spanish language in
order to master it someday, remembering that a language can be a strong tie between persons of different origins
or race or religion. As a citizen of my country, I promise to promote friendship and understanding between it and
the other lands of the world. This is my promise and my oath.
“Now each will turn off the light of the candle…all!...but never the light of your spirit. Let us remember this.
Friends, by the authority granted in me by the presidency of Lázaro de Tormes Chapter, I declare you members of
this chapter. Come forward now to receive your ribbon, sign the register, and receive the welcome due to you.

Ritual de Iniciación
Presidente : Miembros antiguos y nuevos, de esta sociedad hispánica, ¡Salud! Estamos reunidos aquí para la
iniciación de este grupo de estudiantes que han mostrado y probado un vivo interés en la bella lengua castellana.
Escuchemos todos a nuestro secretario, quien nos dará un resumen corto de la historia y de los fines de nuestra
sociedad.
Secretario: Esta SOCIEDAD HONORARIA HISPÀNICA fue fundada por la Asociación Americana de Maestros en
Español y Portugués en 1953 para los estudiantes de las preparatorias norteamericános; y este capítulo se llama
“Lázaro de Tormes; nuestros colores son rojo y el oro. Nuestra insignia y nuestro sello son los de la madre
asociación.
(Los estudiantes empiezan a ponerse de pie. Las velas se repartirán mientras los candidatos toman su posición en
forma de “U” en la biblioteca)
Pres: (muy despacio) Ahora vamos a guarder silencio… Esta es nuestra iniciación, seria y significativa. Escuchen
todos con cuidado….. Esta es nuestra madre vela. Nos sirve cada año. Representa la inspiración.
Sec: Como ejemplo de esta inspiración, repitamos ls palabras del poeta Núñez de Arce, que escribió el poema:
¡EXCELSIOR! ¡TODOS JUNTOS!
“¿Por qué los corazones miserables, por qué las almas viles,
En los fieros combates de la vida, ni luchan ni resisten?
¡El espíritu humano es más constante cuanto más se levante!
Dios puso el fango en la llanura, y puso la roca en la montaña.
La blanca nieve, que en los hondos valles derrítese ligera,
En las altivas cumbres permanence inmutable y eternal”
Pres: Cada uno tiene una velita en la mano. Esta simboliza nuestra carrera en la vida. Así, sin arder, existe…. pero
no vive. Esa velita está diciendo: _ “Si me queman vivo, sino perezo” ¡Ojalá nuestras vidas nunca sean velas sin
arder! (enciendan las velas)
Ahora ustedes repetirán juntos el juramento de la sociedad, frase por frase y con sentimiento:
“Como miembro.. del capítulo Lazaro de Tormes… prometo dedicarme… al estudio de la lengua española.. con el
fin .. de dominarla algún día,..recordando… que una lengua..puede ser.. un lazo fuerte.. entre personas.. de
distintos orígenes.. de raza, religión.. Como ciudadano.. de mi patria.. prometo promover.. la Amistad, y el
entendimiento.. entre ella… y los otros países…del mundo..Esta es mi promesa…. Y mi juramento”
Ahora, cada uno apagará la luz de su velita….¡todos! (apaguen la vela)…¡pero nunca la de su espíritu! Recordemos
esto. Amigos, por la autoridad que me concede la presidencia del capítulo Lazaro de Tormes, yo los declare
miembros de este capítulo. Pasen ustedes enseguida para recibir su listón y para firmar el registro y recibir la
bienvenida debida.
