One Amazing Thing Light Lesson Plan: Ras Malai
You can use this 75 minute lesson plan toward the end of the semester as a wrap-up or “final”
reflection of U100. Depending on how you use it, this lesson could span two class sessions. It
could even serve as inspiration for a Freshman Celebration class project.
Ask students to do a character analysis of one of the 9 characters in the book. You can choose to
have 9 groups, or you could limit the groups and focus on just a few characters. Groups will
practice presentation skills by reporting on their analysis. You could have them do this in-class or
even as a larger take-home assignment (digital presentations like prezi, etc).
Give students the following handout:
Instructions:
1. Focus on your character: ________________________. See the chart below for relevant
page numbers. Think about how your character develops or changes either through the
course of the earthquake experience, trapped with the others or during the course of their
“One Amazing Thing” story. Hint! Don’t just focus on your character’s story. Notice
how s/he reacts to others’ stories as well. Also, think about your character’s special
talents. What are they?
Next draw parallels to the themes we have discovered in U100 and your first
year college experience:
 Time Management and skill sets (being tested, memory)
 Information Competence (ability to gather information and make sense of it,
advisement (willingness to seek and listen to advice)
 Values and goals (diversity, ethics, health, relationships, purpose, belief systems,
money/status values, honesty)
 Civic engagement and responsibility to the community
2. Prepare a brief presentation for the group (options for this include “live presentations, or
digital ones like prezi’s, etc). Make sure to include quotes and direct evidence to support
your discussion!
