Information leaflet for the Pets As Therapy Scheme What do you need to know about the new Pets As Therapy Scheme Benefits of the scheme Senior Psychology Lecturer at the University of Bolton, Dr Jacqui Harrison, says research shows therapy dogs have proven positive impact of anxious people. She said: ‘For many years, we have been aware of the positive psychological and physiological benefits of interacting with animals, with dogs being the most effective in providing these benefits. Recently, scientific research has shown that the mere presence of a therapy dog can significantly reduce anxiety levels in people who are encountering stressful situations in their lives. ‘Petting a trained therapy dog in a controlled environment has been shown to reduce people’s blood pressure and heart-rate, and generally instil a feeling of well-being for the recipient, with some of these changes lasting well beyond the initial interaction. Is Zara trained? Yes, Zara and her handler have passed a Pets As Therapy assessment in order to be approved by Pets As Therapy What will happen when I come to see the dog? You will be shown into a room to meet Zara and her handler. Her handler will show you the best way to approach Zara if you are unsure What happens if I am frightened of the dog? You don’t have to meet Zara, but if you would like to get over a phobia, just tell the reception staff when you book and the handler when you go in so they are aware What happens if I am allergic to the dog? Zara is a Curly Coated Retriever and therefore the coat is different to most dogs. It is a mass of natural tight curls and doesn’t have an undercoat which is the part of the coat which causes allergies for most people How long will I have with the dog? You will have five to ten minutes Will a member of staff be present? Yes Will I see the dog on my own or as part of a group? The choice is yours but there is a maximum or three people allowed to visit at any one time What happens if I do not want the dog to lick me? Just tell the reception staff when you book and the handler when you go in Will I be able to touch the dog? Yes you can pat or stroke the dog, just ask the handler if you are unsure how best to do this Am I allowed to feed the dog? The handler will give you some of Zara’s favourite treats if you would like to feed her Is it not unfair to the dog? The dog will be constantly monitored by her owner to ensure she is enjoying the experience and they have the right to stop the visit at any time if they feel the welfare of the animal is at risk. Adequate breaks are built into the diary schedule of appointments. The dog will be given its own bed and will have free and open access to water. How often is Zara in the University? Following a successful trial of the service Zara will visit the University of Bolton once a month (just call into the student centre for the latest times) Do you want more information about the Pets As Therapy scheme? http://www.petsastherapy.org/
