GRADUATE INTERNSHIP APPLICATION GUIDANCE NOTES 2016/17
Thank you for your interest in the University of Bolton Graduate Internship Programme.
Your application is very important to us and we appreciate the time you will take to complete it. Below
are some guidance notes to assist you when completing your CV and supporting statement. Please
read these notes carefully and fully, it could be detrimental to your application if you do not follow the
guidance provided. We have put these notes together based on previous queries, to try to help you
apply.
Eligibility
In order to apply for the Graduate Internship Programme you must have completed a first degree at
the University of Bolton, within the current year of the start date for the internship i.e. only those
individuals graduating in 2016 can apply for an internship position in 2016.
Graduates will need to be available for the internship on a full time basis and be able to satisfy all the
essential requirements on the person specification for the role of intern, the requirements of the UK
Border Agency, DBS assessment and any occupational health requirements for the role.
Application Process
To apply for an internship you will need to submit a CV, a supporting statement, a Confidential Record
and an Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form.
Please ensure that you specify at the top of your supporting statement the internship position you are
applying for. Failure to do so may result in your application being withheld.
We ask that you specify one role for which you want to be considered. Your CV and supporting
statement should be tailored in relation to that role.
However, you may also express an interest in a second role which you may be considered for if you
are unsuccessful in your first choice. This will only be considered if any of the other roles remain
vacant after the initial recruitment stage.
Please note that the University of Bolton holds the right to remove any internship vacancy if a suitable
candidate is not found.
The closing date for postal and online submissions is Wednesday 1st June at 5.00pm. Any
applications received after the closing date will not be considered for an internship opportunity.
Curriculum Vitae (CV)
You are requested to submit a copy of your CV which should include some and/or all of the following
content:


Personal Details: include your name, full postal and email address, as well as a contact
telephone number.
Personal Statement: a strong statement about you and your career goals which are relevant
to this programme.

Education: use reverse chronological order, starting with your university qualification,
followed by A Levels / Highers or equivalent. Please be sure to list your subjects and grades
achieved.
Work History: include all paid and voluntary work experience, providing details of the role,
company and your achievements and responsibilities.
Skills Profile: you may wish to include a list of the key skills that match with the job criteria,
explaining in what capacity they were acquired.
Interests: you may wish to include this section outlining your interests, particularly if they
have relevance to the internship programme.
References: please provide full contact details (name, address, telephone, email) for 2
referees.
Supporting Statement
A supporting statement is designed to engage the employer and encourage them to give your
application a second look and invite you to interview. It should show evidence of:






Clarity of thought
Enthusiasm
Ability to write clearly and persuasively
Some knowledge about the organisation
Some awareness of what the job will entail
Details about how you can contribute to the organisation
Your task in writing a supporting statement is to:


Explain why you want the job – your interest in and attraction to the organisation. This could
be based on your knowledge of the organisation from personal contact, or from research you
have done about the organisation and the work it is involved with.
Demonstrate how you would be suitable and how you can contribute.
Please submit your supporting statement on the form provided. You should produce no more than 2
sides which should be word processed. Make sure your text is well structured. It is acceptable to use
headings that align with the person specification that will make it easier to read and assess.
References
Please provide an academic and personal reference. References may be requested from your
programme leader to verify your academic achievements, or from any of your previous employment,
work experience or volunteering placements. In addition, we may request evidence of any
achievements you detail in your application form.
