Application Materials for ELA Practitioner Coaches Important dates: Deadline for Application: 5:00 pm, Tuesday, June 2, 2015 Successful applicants notified by Monday, June 8, 2015 Training Monday, June 15, 2015, from 9am-4pm at Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester, MA The FY15 contract will be from June 8-30, 2015. The FY16 contract will be from July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016, with the potential for FY17 renewal Background: The SABES PD Center for ELA is seeking experienced ABE practitioners or directors to provide technical assistance to programs on implementation of the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education (CCRSAE) in developing an ELA scope and sequence and assistance with planning for completing the other curricular materials. Practitioner coaches will not be responsible for developing the scope and sequence or other curricular materials for programs receiving TA. By the end of August, 2015, ACLS is requiring programs to submit a scope and sequence describing one class level of one content area (i.e., Math, ELA, or ESOL). By the end of June 2016, ACLS is requiring programs have in place a full curriculum for all content areas taught. SABES is hiring these contractors in order to be responsive to program needs for support in curriculum development and implementation of the CCRSAE. All Practitioner Coaches will be provided training and support from SABES and ACLS. Scope of Work: SABES is seeking five (5) to eight (8) ABE practitioners or directors to participate in a training from 9am4pm on Monday, June 15, 2015, to be held at Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester, MA. The training will prepare participants to deliver TA to ABE programs that offer ELA instruction. The training on June 15 consists of five parts. Participants will: A. Learn to address the purpose, goals, benefits, and challenges of implementing the CCRSAE and developing and using a scope and sequence for ELA; B. Engage in a step-by-step review of the content and materials associated with developing a scope and sequence for ELA, and processes for development depending on the program’s starting point; C. Discuss implementing the CCRSAE ELA Standards and the three instructional shifts (also known as the key advances); D. Practice demonstrating the presentation of key points and activities for developing a scope and sequence or implementing the CCRSAE and instructional shifts, or both; E. Troubleshoot TA delivery and brainstorm ideas for further supporting teachers and each other. Materials for use during TA will be provided, and the program receiving TA will be required to make copies for their staff. 1 Upon completion of the training, practitioner coaches will receive a letter attesting to the fact they have been trained in the delivery of TA to ABE programs regarding the development of ELA scope and sequence and providing assistance to the program in planning how to complete any other ELA curriculum materials. Budget: For FY15, each contractor will be paid $600 for completing the June 15, 2015 training. There will be no payment for partial or incomplete participation in the full day of training with the exception of an unforeseen emergency that may allow for a partial payment, at the discretion of SABES and with evidence of unforeseen emergency. No makeup sessions will be available. For FY16, each contractor will be paid $975 per program for program-based TA offered (13 hours each): Prepare for and deliver a two-hour, face-to-face training/meeting with program staff (4 hours) Review scope and sequence (or other curricular material) and give online support (7 hours) Administrative tasks/Completion of brief report to SABES Center for ELA PD (2 hours) The number of programs to receive program–based TA offered will be negotiated with the SABES Center, but is expected to be about five over the year as a minimum. Where a program needs TA for less than 13 hours, contractors will be paid at the rate of $75/hour. Payment covers meals, mileage, and all other related expenses. Required Qualifications: Applicants must have at least one of the following bulleted qualifications and a minimum of four years teaching ABE (specifically, English Language Arts, History and Social Studies, and/or Science and technology), or in providing ABE/ELA PD to ACLS-funded programs, and/or in providing educational leadership in an ABE program (e.g., master teacher, teacher leader, curriculum specialist, curriculum developer). B.A. in Education, English Language Arts or related field M.A. in Education, English Language Arts or a related field License to teach K-12 Current ABE License Certificate in Curriculum Development from an accredited postsecondary institution Applicants must have experience in curriculum development from either ABE or K-12. Applicants must possess a working knowledge of the CCRSAE and be engaged in using them to guide instruction at their program. (See http://lincs.ed.gov/publications/pdf/CCRStandardsAdultEd.pdf.) Applicants must possess strong written and oral communication skills including effective public speaking and/or experience in delivering presentations. Applicants must have expertise using technology, such as expertise using laptops and PowerPoint to deliver presentations. 2 Applicants must be familiar with the Massachusetts Policies for Effective Adult Basic Education in Community Adult Learning Centers. Preferred Qualifications: Applicants must have experience in implementing or providing PD to colleagues or staff regarding the ACLS policy for ABE curriculum and instruction: [Curriculum must] be aligned with the standards and level-specific standards of the CCRSAE standards and reflective of the instructional shifts for the program's students; ABE thematic curriculum units must be informed by students' goals, needs, and interests. The level-specific standards of the CCRSAE standards provide the skill sets to be mastered, and develop students' academic and metacognitive skills. Any additional graduate level courses in related areas including some or all of the following: Evaluation and application of knowledge of ABE/English Language Arts instructional approaches and best practices for promoting knowledge and skill acquisition for ABE adult learners Application of knowledge of processes and stages of reading Methods and techniques to formatively assess student progress in English Language Arts. Methods and techniques to apply knowledge of theory, research, and practice related to developing reading and writing skills and reading comprehension.
