Paragraphing
Competency Goal (CG):
1. NC ESL Standard 1: English language learners communicate for Social and Instructional purposes within
the school setting.
2. At the Developing level-3 of English language proficiency, English language learners will process,
understand, produce or use:
 General and some specific language of the content areas
 Expanded sentences in oral interaction or written paragraphs
 Oral or written language with phonological, syntactic or semantic errors that may impede the
communication, but retain much of its meaning, when presented with oral or written, narrative or
expository descriptions with sensory, graphic or interactive support
Math Standards
 4- Model with mathematics.
 5-Use appropriate tools strategically.
 6-Attend to precision.
Specific Objectives
1) To define a paragraph
2) To list and explain the process of paragraph writing.
3) To write academic essays (and research papers) clearly and accurately at an acceptable speed.
4) To have a critical awareness of their writing in terms of unity, content, coherence and linguistic accuracy
(grammatical structure and choice of vocabulary).
