Dr Sarah Yang Spencer
Accounting Placement Program is a subject offered to students who enrol in Bachelor of Accounting.
During the program, students will be sent out to different places to fulfil their 100 hours placement.

I think the benefits of being involved in the Accounting Workplace Program has been that I'm more
workplace ready in the way that I've learnt a lot of technical skills, but I've also learnt a lot of soft skills
that I wouldn't have been able to just from my university studies.

It allows you to apply the theory that you learn at university into practice. It gives you the opportunity
to learn a lot of new work skills.
Linh
The accounting work placement has given me a great opportunity to gain first-hand experience in a
corporate environment. It helped me to develop my personal and professional capabilities.
Luke
My role at Grant Ready was to create a database of cases, case summaries in fact. I went through a
number of recent decisions on the R&D Tax Incentive Grant and ATO Interpretative Decisions. I
made case summaries and created a whole database of about 11 cases and about 12 ATO
Interpretative Decisions, and I also did a bit of admin work. We went through client meetings and just
general networking with people within the company.

At my work placement, the skills that I've learnt cannot be taught in the classroom. Skills such as
teamwork, analytical thinking, and just skills that allow you to solve day-to-day problems that you
encounter in the real work life.

Although we do a lot of teamwork exercises at university, it doesn't compare to when you're in the
corporate environment, and you have to work with other people that you may not know or be familiar
with, and also working with clients.
Linh
I was given a fantastic opportunity to work at La Trobe Finance Division. As a matter of fact, I actually
got a full time job after my placement.
Luke
It was just a fantastic experience to actually put into place your knowledge and skills that you've
learnt at university, and take them into the workplace. I learnt time management skills, presenting
skills, and also just networking.
Simranjeet
I would strongly recommend this program to future students, because it serves as a great head start
towards a career in accounting.

I would just like to say thank you to all the coordinators at La Trobe, and I would definitely
recommend this to anyone who's doing accounting or finance.

During the program, students will receive mentoring support from their supervisor. They also will
learn a lot of skills that simply cannot be attained from the classroom. The ultimate goal of this
program is to help students enrol in this program to be work ready and future ready.
