Greetings, At the UGCC meeting on 8/11/06 the following items were addressed: 1. New members, Mary Bonhomme (University College) and Matt Wood (Physics/Space Sciences) were introduced. The general members then introduced themselves to Mary Bonhomme. John Hadjilogiou is now representing Electrical/Computer Engineering. 2. General mini oral reports were given describing: a. The new online initiative for UC, COB, COPLA and COS. b. The archive project (Liz Fox) has completed. All years 1977-2003 have now been archived. The years 2004-2006 will be added to the archive as will future years. c. The Computer Literacy sub-committee reported plans to pilot a test to determine skills of incoming freshmen students and will report back on results of that study along with any other recommendations it makes regarding how to provide students with access to CL training, as required. 3. The Consent Agenda was approved unanimously. were included in this agenda: The following items a. Chemical Engineering's request to add "C or better" for Math 1001 and Math 1002 before taking CHE 2101. b. Curriculum. Psychology's request to change the Forensic Psychology 4. The COB new International Business major was revisited, amended, and approved unanimously to include a minimum GPA of 2.75 at the end of the fall (first) semester of the junior year to be able to remain in the IB degree; students not meeting the minimum GPA will be changed to the Business Administration degree program. There will not be any requirement that a senior must maintain the minimum GPA of 2.75 in order to graduate from the IB degree as it was felt that it would be too onerous to remove a senior who then drops below the minimum GPA. 5. Adding a new course, CSE 4280 Computer Graphics Algorithms, turned out not to be a new course. This was an FYI item only and I was directed to sign all such documents after presenting them to the committee in the future without putting them on the consent agenda. 6. The re-arrangement requirements (semesters) for Ocean Engineering was tabled. Ocean Engineering will discuss with Civil and Chemical Engineering for fall semesters and Aerospace and Chemical Engineering for spring semester to determine that there will be no conflicts with access to labs and equipment. Once settled, this item will be brought back to the committee. 7. The COPLA's request to add two new courses PSF 4591 and PSF 4562 was approved unanimously with the change for the proposed D/F cutoff amended to 60 which is the same as the University grading system. 8. The proposal to make ASC 1000 a required course for all incoming freshmen identified as "first time in college" freshmen was approved by a vote of 7 for, 5 against, 3 abstains. After considerable discussion among the members, the motion that was approved is to make ASC 1000 mandatory for all First Time In College freshmen and keep it a 1-credit course, but not make it a requirement for graduation from the University. The implication is that if a student who must take the course earns an "F" grade, that student can retake the course using the forgiveness policy, or may choose not to retake it but the "F" grade then will become part of the student's cumulative GPA. The 1 credit earned can be used as a Free Elective. Regards, Barbara Barbara G.
