FATALITY KICKOFF MEETING Keith Porter 1/27/03 OVERVIEW See “Porter (27 Jan 2003) Fatality Kickoff Meeting.ppt” OVERVIEW OF VAN NUYS MODEL Response damage loss (including fatalties) Causes of deaths: collapse and non-collapse Collapse Total: all stories have reduced a significant portion of their height Partial: collapse ratio = (# collapsed stories)/(total number of stories) Non-collapse Falling components Precast façade elements Glazing Parapets Infills Rooftop equipment Contents Architectural components Heart attack (Kim & Hope say it is impossible to relate heart attacks to earthquakes) DM|EDP p[collapse in any story | EDP] p[collapse in other stories | collapse in one story, location of collapsed story, structural characteristics] p[fatality rate a given level | collapse in that story, structural system, use, time of day …] Collapse in Van Nuys will likely results in little spaces near the spandrel beams, none toward the center (east-west axis) of the building PEER WORK TO DATE Cornell discussed Yeo & Cornell 401283931.DOC printed 6/28/16 Keith Porter, 1/27/03 P. 2 of 3 NON-PEER WORK TO DATE City of Nishonomiya survey (subset of Kobe) building inventory (type, size, age)—all buildings in the city. For 900 fatalities, geolocation, building damage surveys (inconsistent among themselves for buildings with multiple surveys of a single building). Fewer than 15% of deaths were by fire. Most were crushed. Seligson reviewed history. They offered an injury pyramid that clearly defines casualty DVs from the viewpoint of public heath officials. They performed a literature review of all publications that mentioned earthquakes and injuries. 700 particles. 150 of them provide meaningful detail. They compiled a standardized injury categorization scheme for earthquake-related injuries. See their article. They created a model questionnaire to gather these data. Their presentation is not quite building specific, but was rather aimed at societal-level events. Their presentation includes a list of predictive variables relevant to earthquake injuries. >> Post Hope & Kim’s presentation. << Eduardo will check Spectra to see if Golcuk construction is similar to Van Nuys in terms of potential void spaces by 1 Apr 2003. >> I should arrange funding for loss modeling to include fatalities. >> Also check with May: what are the fatality metrics? DMS Infill wall damage: N/A Content: overturning of tall, heavy furnishing: N/A Collapse of floor of exposed person Collapse of building Time at which collapse occurs (seconds after start of strong motion): maybe DVS Number of occupants killed or Number of occupants DOA Number of occupants died in hospital Keith Porter, 1/27/03 P. 3 of 3 CONTRACTS Eduardo will consider whether he can do fatality modeling in year 7, possibly injuries as well. Hope & Kim will consider injury modeling in year 7. Ang or Shino might be able to get Taiwan data: NCREE’s database of Chi-Chi Building Damage. << Hope will talk to Shino about getting these data.
