Alpha Tau Omega Chapter Establishes at Florida Tech For Immediate Release After two years of hard work and determination, 38 men were initiated into the Kappa Eta chapter of Alpha Tau Omega. Brian Dailey, the current ATO chapter advisor and university employee was also initiated as an honorary member. This memorable event took place at 11 am on November 17th, 2007. The men of ATO have worked over the past two years not only to build an infrastructure and hierarchy but also to build their numbers while upholding the principles under which the fraternity was based 142 years ago. Daniel Schlegel, the founding president of the Kappa Eta Chapter expressed the main goals of the fraternity for the years to come, “As the Kappa Eta chapter we will strive to succeed not only within our chapter but also within our campus community and our National Fraternity. Alpha Tau Omega is recognized as America’s #1 Leadership Fraternity; this will afford all members the opportunity to become successful leaders within their own lives. Being a Tau allows all of us to grow as individuals, through our Fraternity experience we are able to learn more about ourselves, while also learning about others. Our bond is strong as right itself.” \Members of the newly established chapter were presented with many gifts from the current Fraternities and Sororities on campus. These gifts included: $500 towards their first composite from IFC- presented by Muhammad Furqan Hats from Panhellenic council- presented by Kelly Reda On behalf of Council of Presidents, Ryan Gauthier and Lindsay Allred read the resolution and presented an Artist Rendition of the ATO founding and milestones from founding to modern day, etching of the ATO crest and symbols; and to the President an engraved box and ATO ink stamper. Rodney Bowers on behalf of President Catanese, read the proclamation and welcomed the chapter to the community. “Alpha Tau Omega holds before the young men of the country an ideal and something greater than a mere intellectual ideal. Alpha Tau Omega stands for heart as well as head. It has given men a true ideal of life.” –Otis Allan Glazebrook As with many of the fraternities on Florida Tech’s campus, ATO’s national organization was founded around the time of the end of the American Civil War, on September 11, 1865. They hold strong many of the characteristics that Florida Tech has found in its other fraternities and will continue to find in any future fraternal expansion on to this campus. Following strong Christian principles, ATO has approximately 240 active and inactive chapters nationally with more than 181,000 members and more than 6,500 of these being undergraduate members. With these characteristics and more, ATO was surely a most welcomed asset to Florida Tech fraternal community. ATO began as an idea in the mind of Otis Allan Glazebrook, a civil war veteran who wanted peace and reconciliation. Glazebrook at age 19 was very religious and was hopeful that young men like himself might have been willing to reunite with the northern counterparts if they were surrounded by Christian and brotherly love. Thus emerged the concept of a fraternity that was Greek in name only; it was not based on Greek ideals but on the ideals of peace and love through Christ’s conviction. On September 11, 1865 Alfred Marshall and Erskine Mayo Ross signed the constitution written by Otis Allan Glazebrook giving rise to Alpha Tau Omega a fraternity. Any man of high ideals who is interested in being a campus leader, helping other people, and creating an organization unlike any other is encouraged to contact the chapter President at president@ato-fit.org .
