Key Definitions: Sustainability meets the social, economic, and environmental needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainability curriculum gives students the tools they need to address issues of energy production, environmental health, economic development, culture and society. Such curriculum encourages interdisciplinary learning and problem solving. The Campus as a Living Lab merges academics and campus facilities management to provide students with real-world skills and, for the institution, a path to meet its sustainability goals. Physical Plant Considerations: Student and Instructor Safety Ability to monitor energy and cost savings Impact on ongoing facilities projects Opportunity for partnering faculty and facilities staff Examples of instructional supplies that could be purchased using this process: Vermicomposting bins Garden tools, seeds, plants for the Wayfinding garden beds that will be “loaned” to faculty for instructional use Materials for building rain catchment barrels Supplies to create and present art from recycled materials Process and Timeline for Approval September 25, 2015– Supplies request submitted to Sustainability Curriculum Team October – Sustainability Curriculum Team ranks proposals in order of highest to lowest priority. October - Proposals submitted to Executive Director, Physical Plant for review. November -- Deans Council selects proposals for funding and identifies budget.
