SCALE-UP@CNM
The primary goal of the Student-Centered Active Learning Environment for Undergraduate Programs
(SCALE-UP) Project is to establish a highly collaborative, hands-on, computer-rich, interactive learning
environment for large-enrollment courses.1
The Pedagogy/Andragogy of SCALE-UP:


To create a cooperative learning environment that encourages students to collaborate with their
peers, questioning and teaching one another.
To coach the students during activities by assisting them in answering their own questions and by
letting students present their results to the class for review by instructors and peers as opposed
to just telling students the answer.
The criteria for teaching in the SCALE-UP room are as follows:
Criteria
Complete the form below by checking off criteria below that you are prepared
to use in your teaching. Please note, 80% (or 4 out of 5), of the first five
criteria need to be checked off in order for your application to be considered.
For each criterion you check off, please briefly describe how you will meet
these criteria in your class.
The last criterion, “Technology”, must be checked off in order to teach in JS
301.
In order to teach in JS 301, you must have an AVS technician sign-off on your
technology training for the room.
Have your dean or director sign the form below noting that this class meets
the criteria for use of the SCALE-UP room.

The Learning Environment (both physical structure
and the methods of content delivery and acquisition)
is designed for:
Studio/Workshop-style format of classes (as opposed
to lecture)
- Students are arranged in formal groups
and content acquisition is guided by
building, reproducing, solving and
ultimately critiquing the process for
lessons learned
- Instructors move flexibly between groups,
using questions to guide inquiry and
teaching lessons based on group needs,
and pause the entire class to focus on a
single group’s work as the method to
deliver content through critique and
modeling
Formal cooperative groups of students solving
engaging problems
- Students are grouped in a consistent
manner
- Instructors design groups purposefully
based on discipline and student needs
Building literacy through the work
- Students work through problems
collaboratively and identify the evaluative
criteria to solve similar problems
- Instructors design problems and processes
for students to solve, and derive lessons
through the critique of individuals and
groups in a flexible manner, using the
available technology to make lessons
learned through the work available to all
students as they arrive
Formalized protocols to guide learning
- Students use consistent protocols to guide
workshops. Students may also assist in
designing and redesigning protocols as
the term progresses
If you checked this facet, please
describe how your course, curriculum
and instructional plan adhere to this
facet of a SCALE-UP classroom.
-
Instructors design consistent protocols to
guide workshops based on discipline and
student needs
Questioning is used to deliver content and encourage
student conceptualization
- Students ask questions, inquire about the
content and use skills to unpack problems
- Instructors use Socratic questioning
techniques to guide inquiry in small group
and whole class critique of models
Technology used to solve problems and teach lessons
based on models
- Students use pod-focused technology to
solve problems, and construct and
critique ideas
- Instructors use technology to design
problems, provide feedback and teach
lessons through modeling. Instructors
reinforce key class knowledge and skills
through modeling available to all
students.
