Course Description:
Introductory course into techniques of individual counseling. Practical application of a variety of
therapeutic approaches will be explored through lecture, discussion, viewing videotapes, and
practice.
Textbook: Hackney, H. & Cormier, S., 5th ed. (2005). Counseling strategies and interventions.
Boston: Allyn and Bacon.
Course Objective: In keeping with the outcome of Educators as Reflective Citizen Leaders,
through written assignments, class discussions, class presentations, viewing of videotape, and
objective examinations, the successful student will be able to show evidence of the following

Course Requirements:
Please note: This is a professional counseling course. In-class counseling sessions and
demonstrations should be treated in a courteous, professional, and confidential manner.
1. You are expected to actively participate in class discussions, activities, and to stay abreast
of assigned readings.
2. Participation in two role-play exercises. Value – 30 points
3. Journal articles. Read and summarize two articles from different professional journals
that examine the effectiveness of a particular individual counseling technique or
intervention. Articles must be taken from journals published within the last five years.
Be prepared to make an oral presentation of your articles. The following typed
format is to be used.
a. Complete bibliographic information including:
 Author
 Publication date
 Title of article
 Title of the professional journal and volume number
 Page numbers of the article
b. Summary of the article
c. Your personal reaction and/or opinion including how this information might
apply to your professional development.

Announcements:
All assignments are due as scheduled. Points will be deducted for work submitted after the
scheduled due date.
All assignments submitted to the instructor are to be representative of graduate-level work.
Papers are expected to be typed and free of grammatical errors. Points will be deducted for
papers that do not meet the criteria.
The current Longwood Honor System governs all work in this class for graduate students.
Students are expected to pledge all work submitted for this course. Charges will be filed against
students who violate this policy.
Attendance at all classes is expected. Excessive absences will result in a failing grade.
