Catalog Description: Principles and Methodologies of Classroom and In-Car Instruction
is the second of two courses required by the Commonwealth of Virginia for endorsement
in driver education. This course provides students with an overview of teaching methods
and effective practices for driver education instruction. Emphasis is placed on program
organization and administration, classroom instruction, single car instruction, multiplecar range instruction, simulation and evaluation. Focus is also placed on teaching skills.
The course includes a minimum of 14 hours of behind-the-wheel supervised teaching
experiences. Course content is derived from the Administrative and Curriculum Guide
for Driver Education in Virginia.
Pre-requisites:
 Foundations of Traffic Safety (Health 301)
 Valid driver’s license
 Longwood University requires that each student purchase and pass a criminal
background check through CertifiedBackground.com before going into the
schools. (This is waived for individuals currently employed by a school system.)
Since you will be riding with instructors in school settings, you must have this
completed before you are in the car with any student. The results of a background
check are posted on the CertifiedBackground.com web site in a secure, tamperproof environment, where the student, as well as the organization can view the
background check. To order your background check from
CertifiedBackground.com:
1- Go to www.CertifiedBackground.com and click on “students.”
2 –In the package code box, enter package code: on60
3 – Select a method of payment: Visa, MasterCard or money order.
Once your order is submitted, you will receive a password to view the results of
your background check. The results will be available in approximately 48-72
hours. Once your background check is complete, please provide that password
and the last four digits of your social security number in your portfolio so that
Longwood University may review your background check results.
To drive university vehicles:
1) The student must hold a valid Virginia driver’s license.
2
2) The student may not have any negative points on his/her driving record. This will
be ascertained by the Longwood University Police Department accessing the
student’s driving history. A student may elect not to have this driving check
done, however, he/she will not be able to drive any university vehicles.
