PRAXIS II score reports are divided into Subscores in US History, World History, Government/Civics/Political Science, Geography, Economics, and Behavioral Sciences. Student scores will be reported in a matrix that will indicate the students by number rather than name, acceptable passing scores, and students’ scores in the various categories. Specific NCSS standards addressed include 1.1-1.7 and 1.10. NCSS website provides information and indicators that provide a clear link between these particular standards and PRAXIS II score reports. Longwood SPA Assessment Plan – Social Studies Page 7 Assessment 2: Coursework Content Portfolio NCSS SPA report requires internal evidence from content coursework to demonstrate student content knowledge. The program supervisor will maintain a database of final grades and a collection of course syllabi for a specific group of classes linked to NCSS thematic and discipline standards for all students in the program. Data will be collected from Longwood University coursework beginning with the candidate’s acceptance in the program through the semester prior to student teaching. For assessment reporting purposes, a cohort will be defined as those students engaged in student teaching during the same academic year. Student GPA must be 2.5 or above. Longwood SPA Assessment Plan – Social Studies Page 8 Assessment 3: Lesson Plans Scoring Guide Standards Theme I-X Unacceptable Acceptable Exemplary 1 Student fails to state objectives clearly; fails to make clear linkage to required NCSS themes; student includes content errors in material to be presented (content outline, handouts, etc.); bibliography relies too heavily on the text and non peerreviewed materials; 2 Student clearly states objectives (SOL); required NCSS themes apparent in the structure of the lesson; content outline accurate; handouts and other visuals are creative and error free; develops innovative ways of teaching the content lesson; has blocked lesson in time increments; has divided the class into 2 segments; i.e.; lecture/group work, etc.; bibliography includes various scholarly sources 3 Student clearly states objectives (SOL); required NCSS themes apparent in the structure of the lesson; demonstrates extensive research in identifying new techniques for teaching the material at hand; has blocked lesson in time increments to develop skills in classroom pacing; has divided the lesson into 3 segments to maximize student involvement and keep the class on task; appropriately plans for learners with special needs; plans for possible unanticipated changes in class routine or class schedule; bibliography includes a wealth of sources, alternate reading assignments, and plans for future enrichment Longwood SPA Assessment Plan – Social Studies Comments: Page 9 Students must achieve a 2 or above on each of the five lesson plans to be assessed as part of the TWS for HIST/POSC 300 Methods of Teaching History and the Social Sciences in Secondary School (lesson plans will be available as review for supporting documentation). Assessment 4: Clinical Evaluation The Clinical Evaluation will include the following questions which specifically address NCSS standards and the student teacher’s ability to address them appropriately in the content of their lessons during their student teaching experience: Below are additional standards for those who are pursuing a degree to work in history/social studies education. Please assess this candidate's present ability to demonstrate these characteristics. It is expected that student teachers will achieve “Indicator Demonstrated” on at least eighty percent of the standards from each evaluator. Longwood SPA Assessment Plan – Social Studies Page 11 Assessment 5: Impact on Student Learning Report Due to the nature of the Impact on Student Learning Report, the value of the data will be more appropriately targeted at the broader discipline fields rather than the individual standards as described by NCSS. Evidence will include pre- and post-test data collected during student teaching as part of student teaching and the assessment instruments with answer keys. ISLR and related evidence may provide data which demonstrates an impact on learning of content related to specific NCSS standards but the experiences of student teachers within any given cohort will not be consistent. Longwood SPA Assessment Plan – Social Studies Page 12 Assessment 6: NCSS Student Teaching Evaluation Instrument (Evidence in Planning) NCSS evaluation instrument provides three dimensions (evidence in planning, evidence in teaching, and evidence of effectiveness in producing desired student outcomes) of assessing student teachers. Assessment 6 will address the “Evidence in Planning” element of the assessment instrument. Furthermore, we will utilize the rubric for the NCSS rating system provided on the NCSS website: 1 = Inadequate; 2 = Minimally Acceptable; 3 = Average; 4 = Very Good; 5 = Excellent Student Teachers must receive scores of 2 or above for all themes clearly addressed in lesson plans inspected by the student teacher’s supervisor. Observation forms and copies of student teaching materials will be available as supporting documentation. Student percentile rankings are converted to letter grades determined by departmental policy as follows: 0-19th percentile = F; 20th – 39th = D; 40th – 59h = C; 60th – 79th = B; 80th or above = A. MFT descriptions available through the website indicate a close correlation between elements of the 160 question test and most of the ten NCSS thematic strands. Assessment 8 will address the “Evidence in Teaching” element of the assessment instrument. Furthermore, we will utilize the rubric for the NCSS rating system provided on the NCSS website: 1 = Inadequate; 2 = Minimally Acceptable; 3 = Average; 4 = Very Good; 5 = Excellent Student Teachers must receive scores of 2 or above for all themes clearly observed by the student teacher’s supervisor during the execution of lesson plans. Observation forms and copies of student teaching materials will be available as supporting documentation. The data for student teachers will be entered into a table similar to the one under Assessment 6. Longwood SPA Assessment Plan – Social Studies Page 15
