ELECTRIC HEATER SAFETY
Whether purchased by the University or the personal property of the user, two issues affect the use of space
heaters in campus buildings — fire safety and energy efficiency. The efficient use of energy by the University is
important, and electric space heaters are a very costly means of heating. If a member of the campus community
feels that a space heater is necessary for adequate warmth, this may indicate that the building heating system
needs to be adjusted or repaired. Policy 5603 allows the use of portable electric space heaters in faculty and
administrative offices during times when the temperature in an office drops below 68 degrees F. The use of
portable space heaters is strictly prohibited in University residence halls. Space heaters are a potential source
of fire if not used properly. The Office of Environmental Health, Occupational Safety and Emergency
Management strongly discourage their use in all University buildings, guidelines have been established to reduce
the risks associated with these devices. The requirements listed below, applicable code requirements, and
manufacturers’ recommendations must be followed to maintain a safe worker environment and to protect
property.
