Faculty of Education
Research Income and Initiatives Funding Scheme 2016
The Faculty of Education’s current Compacts funding strategy focuses, primarily, on obtaining external income. This strategy builds on the success of
previous Compacts funding allocations, which have provided support for research capacity building and for building researchers’ track records.
The goal of the Research Income and Initiatives Scheme is to support new initiatives in developing research-industry partnerships, research
commercialisation and collaborations between industry partners and academics that have the potential to bring external research income to CSU. This
approach is in keeping with the goals underpinning the Australian Government’s National Innovation and Science Agenda – to improve Australia’s
record of research-industry collaboration (see http://www.innovation.gov.au/start/research-and-universities?tid=3)
Funds may be requested for travel costs to meet with potential partners, release from teaching, or other costs that will enable academics to progress
industry partnerships, as well as for consultant expertise, specialist training or workshops designed to provide targeted support or advice. Applications
need to set out the goals and rationale for the industry collaboration, and the stages and steps that will lead to the collaborative development of projects
that will attract external research income. Co-funding by the industry partner is encouraged but not an essential requirement for funding through this
scheme.
Faculty of Education academic staff are invited to propose a funding initiative. Applications for up to $10,000 will be considered; however the amount
may vary depending on the composition of the research team and the size and scope of the proposed research. Two members of the Research &
Graduate Studies Committee and the Associate Dean Research will consider each application and budget in relation to its potential value for money.
Informal consultations with Prof Linda Harrison, (Acting) Associate Dean Research, are encouraged, both to provide advance notice of a pending
submission and so that the Faculty Research Office may provide advice as to possible supports, funding amounts, etc., in preparation of the
application. Application reviews will be completed as these forms are received.
Note: Budget requests must be justified by detailed costings. Travel costs must be in line with CSU travel policy and specific work agreements for
Faculty of Education staff. Requests for marking must specify the subject(s), number of students and time allocated per assessment task. Salary rates
must be based on current HR salary guidelines or School policies for marking rates. Applications must be discussed with your Head of School prior to
submission, particularly if funds are intended to be used for teaching release.
A report on the outcomes of the funding must also be submitted. Where appropriate your report can identify the next stages in your collaborative
research plan. This may include further applications for funding. Your report should also include any challenges or unexpected opportunities that arise
to inform future funding planning.
Please contact Prof Linda Harrison, (Acting) Associate Dean Research (lharrison@csu.edu.au) if you have any questions or to discuss a proposed
application.
