"The approach to the base was
completely digital," explained CIS
Hollywood visual effects supervisor Bryan
Hoita. "Production shot some Vista Vision
sand dune plates in California which we
replicated using photogrammetry
techniques. We could then re-project
those textures to do a virtual shot showing
the Howler aircraft entering the door that
leads to an enormous landing platform."

"The challenge was how to light
something that big and still make it hold
up and look interesting," said Hoita. "We
needed a number of localised light
sources for the landing area so we
introduced global illumination calculations
into all of that environment."
