Introduction to Sustainable Practice in the Workplace
The Introduction to Sustainable Practice in the Workplace will provide you
with a snapshot of sustainability, an introduction into the lifecycle of
products, and discussion of the drivers, barriers and values that motivate or
inhibit sustainable change at home and in the workplace. There is active
discussion on sustainable practices in the work place and methods of driving
changes within CSU. These ideas are carried across to the workplace as small
group projects to achieve incremental change. This is a great program for all
staff at CSU and provides beneficial outcomes personally and at an
organisational level.
CSU Advance in partnership with CSU Green is offering the following
introductory sustainability program to all interested staff members.
Program outline:
Pre-workshop reading and activities – these are designed to engage
participants in sustainable thinking and practice such as measuring energy
usage & carbon footprint.
Workshop - Attendance required for 5 hours. The venue and dates will be
confirmed when expressions of interest are registered. The workshop is
designed to be interactive and focus on implementing behaviour changes in
the workplace, such as:

Turning off the lights when leaving the room

Turning off the computer at the end of each day

Good waste management practices (e.g. CSCS staff setting up a
cleaning container recycling system; Res Life recycling in CSU
residences; organic composting at CSU Orange, Therese King & BettyAnn Nannes)

Reducing paper printing (e.g. Kerrilyn Toal)

Engaging staff on energy efficiency in the workplace (e.g. Peter Jones
& Jennifer Young CSU Albury-Wodonga)

Sustainable purchasing and procurement – whole of life costing (e.g.
Lisa Faulkner).
Group work with other participants in the program is required to identify,
implement and monitor a small workplace project to support an
organisational change in sustainable practice. A selection of projects
completed by groups who have previously undertaken the training can be
accessed on the CSU Green website. This program will coincide with the CSU
Green Grass Roots Grant program, a grant scheme to fund local engaging
workplace projects and capped at $1000.00.
This is based on an accredited training program against the nationally
recognised Unit of Competence BSBSUS301A – Implement and monitor
environmentally sustainable work practices. Participants who complete the
training and small workplace project will receive a CSU Certificate.
Program participants have the opportunity to become the CSU ‘Sustainability
Champions’ for your School/Division or building to support ongoing
organisational change.
Support for the program will be provided by CSU Training as the RTO. Project
coaching will be support by CSU Green as the sustainability experts.

Testimonials
“It was such an exciting thing to see, all of the broad demographics of the 28
staff, buying into what both the message/learning of this Unit was and the
bigger picture intent of why we rolled out this program”.
“There is a general buzz from the staff down here in relation to the training
and some excitement around the potential outcomes from the projects, as
well as very positive words about the trainer’s style, which is to be expected”.
