Composition 1 Portfolio Presentation By: Jim Altringer December 2000 Introduction • I consider myself a so-so writer. There are many things I do good and some I do bad. Over the first semester I believe I became a better writer. • In this presentation I will tell about my papers and the things I’ve learned over the semester. Changes/Skills Demonstrated • • • • • • I have learned to write an effective summary. I know how to cite sources correctly in my writing. I have learned four ways to organize essays. I know the essential features of a good thesis statement. I have learned how to use better grammar in my work. I learned not to use the word “you” in my work. Writing Skill/Levels 1 & 2 • Level One: – Expresses clearly thoughts and ideas in informal writing contexts. – Composes structurally correct sentences in Standard American English. – Generates well-developed, coherent paragraphs. • Level Two: – Processes information to produce writing that clearly and accurately summarizes and/or reports. – Writes, well-developed, focused essays. – Searches for information and inserts research appropriately. • Return to original Conclusion • I have fulfilled the expectations of the Writing Skill/Levels 1 & 2. • My goal for Composition 2 is to use more feeling and emotion in my writing. I have never been really good at showing emotion in my writing so I hope this is something I can improve in my writing next semester. Home I have learned how to write an effective summary. • I have learned that in writing an effective summary you have to sum up everything you’ve just read. You write the main point in one sentence. • Return to original I know how to cite sources correctly in my writing. • I learned how to use the MLA to cite my sources correctly. • “Sleep deprivation affects school performance in teens, increases accidents and death rates, and, in general presents a lower quality of life.” • http://health.yahoo.com/health/diseases_and_con ditions/disease_feed_data/sleep_disorders/ • Return to original I have learned four ways to organize essays • Four ways of organization I used were; narrative, compare and contrast, persuasive and powerpoint. • I picked the persuasive essay because I had the most fun writing that one. It helped people understand more about sleep • Return to original I know the essential features of a good thesis statement. • A good thesis report should say what the main point of your paper will be. It should not be long, but it should be specific. • “I’ve had a lot of weird dreams in my day.” This is a good thesis because it is brief and tells what my paper will be about. • Return to original I’ve learned to use better grammar • At the beginning of the year I would use bad grammar. At the end of the year I was using the right words in the right places. • “I ain’t going there tonite.” Now I would say, “I’m not going there tonight.” • Return to original I learned not to use the word “you” in my work • I’ve learned not to use the word “you” in my work because it is not proper. • That’s not very long ago though. I’ve had sad dreams, happy dreams, and of course scary dreams. I’ll tell about the most memorable dreams I’ve ever had. • For example here I could have said, “I’ll tell you about the most memorable dreams but instead I didn’t use it. • Return to original
