Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales The Unit is based on Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. The students will be reading the prologue to each of the characters and discussing the naivety of the narrator. In class, we will be reading a summary of the particular pilgrim’s tale we are focusing on, and discussing what the tale says about the pilgrim. Also as part of the lesson, the students will be studying Chaucer’s writing style and the characteristics of the time period through written assignments, discussions, and presentations. The purpose of this unit is to encourage students to demonstrate thought and interpretation of literature through reading, writing, and discussion. Evaluation will primarily come from the written KWL and journals, the inclass discussions, the CT project, as well as the unit test. The Unit objectives are as follows: 1) Students will be able to distinguish Chaucer’s writing and the characteristics of the time period in which he writes by written assignments and in-class discussions. 2) Students will analyze literature by reviewing the characteristics of a naïve narrator. 3) Students will demonstrate thought and interpretation of the literature through visual projects presented to the class in a variety of forms.
