Composition 1
Portfolio Presentation
By: Rachel Sand
December 2000
Introduction
• I have become a better writer with my skills
improving throughout this semester. This
improvement shows very much with each of
my writing assignments. .
• This powerpoint shows each of my writing
assignments and it gives examples of all
four writing styles that we did. They were:
definition, narrative, compare and contrast,
and persuasive.
Changes/Skills Demonstrated
• List 6 specific changes in writing or skills
developed this semester. Four are required (see
next slide); two are student options.
• Use the language from the common course
syllabus to identify some of the material to cover
• Use the language from the Ability/Skill/Levels
document—this is what the portfolio should
demonstrate.
• Hyperlink each point in list to the slide which
demonstrates the point .
•
**Note that the two documents hyperlinked on this page are on the I drive. If
you are not on the Network, you cannot access them with these links. Also,
students do not have access to the I drive.
Changes in my Writing this
Semester
• I have learned to write an effective summary.
• I know how to cite sources correctly in my
writing.
• I have learned four ways to organize essays.
• I know the essential features of a good thesis
statement.
• Student option 1: for example, I have learned
some ways to reduce the wordiness of my
sentences.
I have learned to write an
effective summary.
• The essential features are good grammar,
and it should be a final wrap up of all the
information given in your paper. When you
are done with the summary, the writer
should be able to describe the whole paper
within a few sentences.
• This is an example of a summary.
I know how to cite sources
correctly in my writing.
• We learned how to use MLA style of citing
a source. Citing sources correctly means to
give credit to where you got your
information and to show that you didn’t
plagiarize the information.

I have learned four ways to
organize essays.
• Narrative, Definition, Compare and
Contrast, Persuasive
• We learned how to write four different
styles of writing this semester and I have
chosen the narrative style as the one paper
to show on this slide. I chose to write about
a young boy’s unfortunate death.
• Paper
I know the essential features of a
good thesis statement
• A good thesis statement can be short sentence or a
paragraph. It contains information that tells the
reader what is going to be written about in the
essay. It can also contain your opinion if you were
writing a persuasive paper.
• People have the right to own guns. I think that
this is my best thesis statement that I made
throughout all my papers. This is good because it
is clear and it gets to the point.

Student Option 1
• I have learned that there are some types of papers
that I am better at writing about. For example, I
wrote my narrative essay on a young boy’s death. I
think that this is my best essay that I have done.
• I have also learned not to be so wordy in my
essays and I also learned how to write an effective
thesis statement.

Conclusion
• Student should indicate the expectations of the
Writing Skill/Levels 1 & 2 (they should copy the
text!) and self assess.
• I feel that I have the writing level of 1 right now.
