New Try at Criterion Three: The University is accomplishing its educational and other purposes 11-30-00 revised The Strategic Planning Process and Assessment The Roundtable Report and the Cornerstones: Here we need a statement about the Roundtable report, what it is, where it came from, the SBHE response to it, the campus response to it. And some statement of the accountability measures, that we are accountable to the SBHE and the legislature. This part might also include references to regional and community purposes. Must describe how these relationships effect strategic planning. (Ellen Chaffee is working on this.) The Mission Statement and the Vision Statement: see the 1999-2000 Holleque report for a good description of the history behind the mission / vision statements. Board mandate for technology. Here we need to include the mission and vision statements as well as a comment about how the university assessment plan responds to these statements. Also, some pages from Criterion One might be referenced here. The Assessment Plan: General Institutional Assessment: Here we need a diagram that illustrates the university assessment plan. Include here the four purposes for assessment found in the NCA book. Assessment as a measure of achievement: abilities / skills Assessment as a means of providing constructive feedback Assessment of Teaching and Learning: Educational Technology (Terry Corwin is working on this.) The NCA Self-Study Process for All Units Here I think we put some explanation of the Institutional Improvement Committee (IIC) and its role as the “steering committee” for the NCA Self-Study. Perhaps describe how the criterion committees were put together, the attempt to involve as many people as possible (faculty, staff, students, community members). (Terry Corwin is working on this.) [Performance Measures - Satisfaction - Student Academic Achievement] Admissions Standards: Maybe Dan Klein could fill in this part.(Dan Klein copied this out of the bulletin. I will copy it from there too I guess.) Abilities: Maybe list the abilities here. Introduction to Academic Programs: (Les Wong is working on this.) General Education (I think curriculum committee is working on this.) Academic Programs: In this part I think we should have some other headings such as the following: regular analysis of criteria and policies for admission to and continuance in the program; adoption of abilities model; clinical and field-based experiences with review by student, cooperating instructor, and faculty mentor; student portfolio development; continuous student evaluation of course objectives; digital portfolios as exit requirement; divisional improvement plan. (Maybe I have to pull this information from the divisional narratives.) Teacher Preparation: Some other headings might show here like clinical and field-based experiences with review by student, cooperating teacher, and faculty mentor. (Education has their own survey. Get results and analysis from Larry Grooters.) Follow-up Survey of Graduates: First and third year teacher education graduates complete General Knowledge Survey to determine the degree of satisfaction related to preparation. Principal and teacher evaluation surveys accompany this survey to assess the performance of those graduates. Accomplishments of Graduates Here we can put references to test scores, employment, graduate school acceptance, etc. (Jan Drake has been asked to provide this.) Time Line for Implementing the Assessment Plan NCA-CIHE article by Celia Lopez 1999 which discusses “levels.” Describe how we are in terms of the levels. (I guess I have to write this part.) Also see Holleque report 1999-2000 page 9 reference to Chickering and Gamson’s 7 principles. We have survey data related to these. [in 1992 report: VCSU Assessment Plan Compared with 10 Required Characteristics - Look for current NCA-CIHE article that could replace the 10 characteristics] *Student Academic Standing Honor Rolls: (Monte is working on this.) Acceptance into Professional Schools and Graduate Study (I asked Jan Drake to update this.) Teacher Preparation: Testing Abilities Skills Portfolios (I asked Larry Grooters to update this section. I should also find out about standardized testing in music.) Probation and Suspension Policies: (Monte is working on this too.) Retention Activities: (I asked Dan Klein to update this part. He said he wasn’t in charge. Follow up with Glen.) Employment Placement: (I asked Marcia Walker to provide this information.) *Student Development: (I asked Glenn to update this section.) Description and Function Organization and Resources Assessment How are these student development things evaluated? Plan for the future (So what? What do we do with the results of the assessments?) *Program Quality IIC, Program Reviews, perhaps changes in VPAA *Faculty Accomplishments I think this might be covered in one of the other criterion. Description and Function Organization and Resources Assessment Plan for the Future *Research and Development I don’t know what to put here. *Public and Community Service *Institutional Climate
