Required Text : Epp, Susanna S. Discrete Mathematics with Applications, 4 th ed. Brooks/Cole, 2011.

Available in the book store.

Class Location: Monday and Wednesday 2:30PM-3:45 PM, room H118

16 week class starting date January 26, 2015 and ending June 1 st , 2015.

Catalog Description

Introduction to discrete mathematics. Includes basic logic, methods of proof, sequences, elementary number theory, basic set theory, elementary counting techniques, relations, and recurrence relations.

Prerequisite

MATH 280 or equivalent with a grade of “C” or better or “Pass”

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

1) Use recursion to analyze algorithms and programs;

2) Write proofs using symbolic logic and Boolean Algebra;

3) Use sets to solve problems in combinatorics and probability theory;

4) Apply matrices to analyze graphs and trees; and

5) Use finite state machines to model computer operations.

Grading Policy : There will be three(3) exams in this course, one(1) Final 30%, two (2) in-class exams 15% each. There will be a group project worth 10%,and worksheets will be 30% of the grade. The following is the grade scale with the exception that you must receive higher than 59.9% on the final to receive a grade of a C or higher in the course.

93% ≤ x A

90%≤ x<93% A-

87%≤ x< 90% B+

83%≤ x<87% B

80%≤ x<83% B-

76%≤ x<80% C+

70% ≤ x<76% C

60% ≤ x<70% D x<60% F (your grade is x in the above inequalities)

(I reserve the right to curve down the above cutoffs)

Note that no Incompletes will be given

Grade breakdown : 30% Final

30% in-class exams (15% each)

10% Group Project

Exams : The final will be a comprehensive exam on June 1 st , 2:00pm-4:00 pm . Part of the final will be take home and the other part is in-class. There will be two exams in the semester in class on the tentative dates listed in the schedule below. The exams will be closed book and notes.

Group Project : there will be one group project worth 10% of your grade. It will be comprised of a written, oral, and visual report (more info will be given at a later date) the presentations will take place on April 27-29, 2015.

Worksheets: Worksheets will be given almost daily in class and they will be collect the following lecture. The worksheets will be graded based on correctness, completion, and neatness.

Attendance : everyone in this class sign up to meet at the given time in the given location therefore I expect that everyone will show on a regular basis (90% of the time). I encourage you to attend lecture both physically and mentally as it will help you a great deal in passing my class. It is the instructor’s

discretion to withdraw a student after the add/drop deadline (02-06-2015) due to excessive absences. Excessive absences is defined as four (4) missed classes or six (6) hours . A tardy counts as one hour missed.

Cheating : Do NOT cheat in my class. While I encourage students to work together on their homework and to study for exams, I do NOT tolerate cheating and will report any one that is caught cheating in my class. The penalty for cheating can range anywhere from a zero on the assignment or test to being removed from class or the college. “Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure,” George Edward

Woodberry. Examples of things that I consider cheating are: using books or notes on a test, claiming someone else’s work as your own, having copies of instructor solution manuals, hacking computers, stealing exams, etc. if you are in doubt whether the activity is cheating you should ask me.

Classroom behavior : I expect every person in my class to respect ever other person in my class. This means no cells phones or any other noise makers. If I see a cell phone or earbuds out you will be asked to leave, and it will count as a tardy (1 hour). I expect that everyone will conduct themselves in such a way as not to interfere with the learning of any other student. Your classmates are paying good money to attend class so please respect them and me. Student code of conduct shall be followed as outlined in the Cuyamaca College catalog, as well as

FERPA will be observed so please read up on them.

Technology: The use of computers and cell phones is prohibited in lecture. Any recording (audio, visual, still frame, cell phone camera, etc., must be approved by instructor or be a DSPS accommodation.I plan to use blackboard to update assignments and important information about the class.Also, it might come in handy to have a scientific calculator.

TI calculators can be checked out at the library circulation desk.

Make-ups: make-ups will be allowed in the case of an unexpected documented emergency only. The student is responsible for providing documentation and setting up a makeup time in a timely manner. If you know that you will have a conflict beforehand and notify me immediately we may be able to work something out in advance of your conflict. Everyone signed up for this class knowing the final exam day and time and I am giving you the tentative dates for the exams; therefore, there should be no nonemergency make-ups.
