F 12/10 GUIDELINES FOR FUNDING ASSESSMENT PROJECTS ($500 or less) Valley City State University has established a fund to support individuals and groups undertaking the process of improving student learning for all students. 1. Eligibility: VCSU full and part time faculty and staff connected with the delivery of instruction 2. Activities funded: 1) Assessment Planning 2) Assessment Tools and Methods 3) Use of Assessment Data 4) Record Keeping and Procedures Monies may be used by faculty to fulfill the normal academic requirements for a certificate or degree only once. Grant funding may not be used for faculty release time, payment to faculty during the regular work week, or food for regular ongoing department or committee meetings. Ordinarily, funds will not be approved for travel to professional meetings. Access the Academic Travel information available www.vcsu.edu/develop for travel support. 3. Proposal Evaluation: Proposals will be evaluated on merit with special consideration to proposals that gather and use information/data and share the data in a written form with the campus entities that may benefit from or apply the information. Funding requests for these mini-grants are for $500 or less. 4. General Application Procedures: The applicant will submit a formal application to the Director of Graduate Studies and Research through the Department Chair and/or the Dean/Division Chair. The final approving authority for the application is the Faculty Development Committee and the Director of the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. 5. Applications Submission: The Assessment Grant Application form must be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research (211 McFarland Hall). 7. Human Subject Approval: individuals conducting research with human subjects must apply for formal human subject approval. Forms are available online at https://www.vcsu.edu/irb. 8. Grant Money Expenses: If awarded, grant money must be spent within the fiscal year. Grant monies do not roll over into the next fiscal year. 9. Final Report: A final report is required of the project leader. Payments will be made at the time the final report is received. Reports must be turned in to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research within 30 days after the end of the fiscal year in which the research was funded. Failure to do this will compromise your eligibility for future funding. Final reports should include: a. A short abstract of the project highlighting the purpose, the results, and any planned follow-up to the project. b. A one to two page report of the project including a budget indicating how the grant funds were spent. 10. A suggested format for the email would be: I am familiar with the proposed project entitled [name of project] led by [name of project leader or applicant] and approve of its submission for funding from the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. [Additional comments in support of the project are optional, but may be added] Acknowledgements should be sent to Misty Lindgren, assistant for the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. Funding Request Deadline: Those individuals wishing to receive funding for Assessment grants must submit their grant application form by midnight of the application deadlines to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. Applications are accepted in hardcopy or by email. August 18th October 1st February 1st Final Approval: The final approving authority for the application is the Faculty Development Committee and the Director of the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. The applicant or leader will receive the outcome of the Committee’s decision within two weeks after the Funding Deadline.
