ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE MINUTES
February 6, 2004

Members Present: Dale Doty, Carol Easely, Beth Franz, Pete Grant, Diane Hipsher, Ross
Justice, Doug Kranch, Peg Moir, Kate Peresie, Ginger Perowitz, Paul Sukys
The meeting was called to order at 1:05 p.m.
The minutes for December 12, 2003, January 16, 2004, and January 30, 2004, were read and
approved with corrections.
Pete Grant summarized the progress in developing assessment outcomes in the various
departments in the Arts & Sciences division. A copy of his written report is attached. Some items
of interest drew comments from the committee.
Mathematics: A concern was expressed that the assessment being used is only of a small
group of students; however, it was better than no assessment at all. Pete Grant noted that
the mathematics department is not ready for an across-the-curriculum assessment.
Math100 was chosen because the data is already being collected. They intend to expand
to other courses in the future. This is a course assessment which will eventually be
expanded to a cross-curriculum assessment.
Humanities: In response to a question from the committee, Pete Grant said that the
content of the courses that is being assessed.
Physics and Science: These areas are focused on serving specific curricula and thus don’t
lend themselves to cross-curricular assessment. For this reason, these departments have
suggested that embedded assessments be used in the Health Sciences courses that use
these science courses as prerequisites.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:45 p.m.
The next meeting will be on February 27 at 1:00 p.m. in F-148.
