Lesson Plans 10th Week – October 27 – October 31 Please note: I make my lesson plans extensive and with high expectations. If the students are struggling and things do not go as quickly as planned, I scale back. You may see activities that I planned for last week have been moved to the current week to accommodate the pace of my learners. Major Objectives: Writing & Writing Mechanics Students will use their knowledge of simple and compound sentences to write 5 simple sentences and 5 compound sentences using their SPEC vocabulary words. Given the SLAM writing organizers and classroom discussion of the plot of “Thank You, Ma’m,” students will write a 5- 7 sentence paragraph for the following prompt: Did Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones make a permanent difference in Roger’s life? Students will read dialogue in “Thank You, Ma’m” and will determine rules of punctuation. After they have determined how to use punctuation correctly, they will be able to punctuate basic dialogue with 70% accuracy. Students will review the use of commas in sentences with items in a series. Vocabulary Students are working with Greek and Latin root words, prefixes, and suffixes. This week, we will finish the root word spec (to look, to see). Quiz over these words will be FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31. Vocabulary words using this root word are: circumspect (adj) careful to LOOK at all possibilities before acting; cautious; aware of consequences inspect (v) to LOOK carefully in search of flaws introspection (n) the act of LOOKING into one’s own thoughts and feelings perspective one way of LOOKING at things respect (v) to LOOK up to someone; to show honor retrospective (adj) LOOKING back at past things spectacle (n) something displayed for the public to SEE spectacles (n) glasses that help someone to SEE better spectator (n) a person who WATCHES something, such as a sporting event speculate to LOOK at and think about something from different points of view Students will are working on an activity called, “Out with the Old and In with the New.” They will “toss” the following overused words and will use new vocabulary to replace them: OLD WORD NEW WORD nice considerate good superior smart ingenious laughed chuckled pretty elegant said remarked happy jubilant like prefer Students will take a quick pre-test of 34 commonly used words to ensure that they are ready to move more quickly on the “Out with the Old and In with the New” vocabulary exercise. Reading Students will learn about common structures of informational text. They will identify the following textual structural components in examples: Description Problem and Solution Compare and Contrast Cause and Effect Sequence Learning Activities the Week of October 20, 2014 Monday Tuesday 1. Students will review SPEC vocabulary words by writing 5 simple sentences using 5 of the words. 2. Students will take a quick pre-test of 34 commonly used words to ensure that they are ready to move more quickly on the “Out with the Old and In with the New” vocabulary exercise. 3. Given the SLAM writing organizers and classroom discussion of the plot of “Thank You, Ma’m,” students will write a 5-7 sentence paragraph answering the following prompt: Did Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones make a permanent difference in Roger’s life? 1. Students will review SPEC vocabulary words by writing 5 compound sentences using the last 5 of the words. 2. Students will learn about common structures of informational text. They will identify the following textual structural components in examples: Description Problem and Solution Compare and Contrast Cause and Effect Sequence 3. Students will continue working on their paragraphs. Each student will confer with me to help them edit their writing. 4. If students are waiting for me to check their writing before they continue writing, they will work on the common structure of informational text assignments until I can get to them. Wednesday/ Thursday 1. Friday Students will complete and submit their paragraphs about “Thank You, Ma’m.” 2. Students will complete the common structure of informational text assignments. 3. Students will review the SPEC vocabulary words for QUIZ FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31. 4. Students will learn new vocabulary words below: OLD WORD NEW WORD nice considerate good superior smart ingenious laughed chuckled pretty elegant said remarked happy jubilant like prefer 5. Students will review dialogue in “Thank You, Ma’m” and will determine how to correctly punctuate dialogue. They will then work on punctuating sentences with dialogue. 1. Students will take a quiz over SPEC words. 2. Students will work with new vocabulary words assigned Wednesday and Thursday. 3. Students will use prior knowledge to place commas correctly in sentences.
