Students will sign in and out from tutorials. STUDENT GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS: There are three major Student Goals for this course: 1. Leave this classroom everyday smarter than you were when you walked in. 2. Score at least a 3 on the AP U.S. History Exam in May 2015. To do this, you will have to show mastery of the following skills: A. Write Well B. Think Analytically C. Know a vast amount of US History 3. Get a Level II on the Social Studies section of the STAAR Exam in May. 4. Learn to think historically, which includes: A. Placing information in historical context B. Making connections between different time periods C. Identify patterns, themes and recurring issues D. Understand cause and effect E. Avoiding presentism REQUIREMENTS: All student work will be maintained as the responsibility of the student. Students are required to complete all reading assignments in full, on time, and independently. MATERIALS: . Students must maintain a class binder. Students must write in INK! No pencil will be accepted. Pens will be provided, to students, by the teacher with acceptable student collateral. SUPPLIES: Each class will have to bring a different item that will be used among all classes: FIRST PERIOD One 10 pack ballpoint pens, the cheaper the better. SIXTH PERIOD: Two new highlighters, any color. CLASS RULES: 1. Tardy students must adhere to the school tardy penalties without exception. 2. We will observe a 10 minute dead period at the beginning of each period. No passes will be given during this time. 3. The personal electronics standards WILL be enforced as required by the administration of WHS. 4. Dress code WILL be enforced as required by the administration of WHS. 5. Under NO circumstances are students to leave the classroom without a permit. EVALUATION: 1. Grades will be based on the Westside High School Grading Policy. Minor grades will count 30% of the total grade, Major grades, 70%. 2. Students scoring below an 80% on any grade will be permitted to redo the assignment as mandated by state law. Students will have one attempt to redo the assignment (within one week of the posting of the grade) To re-take a major grade, student MUST show evidence of completion of all assignments related to that major grade. GRADES: 1. Minor Grades will be scored on a 5 point scale(5=100, 4=90, 3=80, 2=70, 1=60, 0=50) 2. Major WRITTEN Grades will be graded on a 7 point scale using an AP Rubric 3. Major Exam Grades will usually be on a 100 point scale. FILM GUIDELINES: Throughout the school year we will be watching several historically relevant video clips. Some of the clips will contain footage from “R” rated movies. NONE of the clips will contain profanity, nudity, or violence. NONE of the clips will be longer than 5 minutes. Students must have parent permission to view these film clips. Students whose parents are not inclined to give permission will not be penalized in any way. Those students will be temporarily moved to another location while the rest of the class watches the film clip.
