Week of: November 10-14, 2014 Weekly Learning Targets Teacher: Kindred Team: U.S. History I can identify examples of New Deal policies enacted under the leadership of FDR and compare those policies to other approaches to solving the economic crisis of the Great Depression. I can evaluate and summarize the effectiveness of New Deal policies in addressing economic and social issues during the Great Depression. I can evaluate the impact of Franklin Roosevelt’s attempts to increase the number of justice of the U.S. Supreme Court as one example of a challenge to the system of checks and balances between the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government. I can form generalizations to describe how the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation [FDIC], the Securities and Exchange Commission [SEC], and the Social Security Administration are examples of st New Deal policies that continue to affect the lives of Americans in the 21 century. Monday Activities: 1. Do Now: Name the 2 American Presidents who were in office during the Great Depression. 2. Hoover vs. FDR: Students will receive short biographies on Presidents Hoover and Roosevelt. They will then complete a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting the two Presidents and their reactions to the Great Depression. 3. New Deal Programs: Students will receive information on New Deal programs and determine how the programs affected government spending. Materials: Articles, venn diagrams Follow Up/HW: STUDY FOR GREAT DEPRESSION TEST FRIDAY 11/14 Tuesday Activities: 1. Do Now: What are the 3 categories of FDR’s New Deal programs? 2. New Deal Video: Students will view a brief History Channel clip on FDR’s New Deal and answer 5 questions. 3. Great Depression Card Sort: Students will receive a collection of terms, definitions and visuals focusing on Great Depression issues. Students will then match the terms to the appropriate definitions and visuals. 4. Powers of the President Discussion: Students will read about FDR’s court packing scheme and answer the following question- “Did FDR’s actions violate the principle of checks and balances or separation of powers? Why or why not?” Materials: Video questions, cards Follow Up/HW: STUDY FOR GREAT DEPRESSION TEST FRIDAY 11/14 Wed/Thur Activities: 1. Great Depression Photo Essay Activity: In groups, students will analyze visuals concerning the Great Depression. They will then arrange the visuals on to a sheet of butcher paper and provide commentary on their relation to varying aspects of the Great Depression, such as the New Deal and the Dust Bowl. 2. Great Depression Quiz: Students will answer 10 questions over the Great Depression. 3. Review for Exam: Students will answer questions on the review sheet for tomorrow’s exam and participate in a review game.
