Your computer accounts You have been assigned a unique Calvin username. Your username, along with a passphrase, gives you access to all your Calvin computer accounts. These accounts remain active as long as you are registered for classes. Once you graduate, your accounts will remain active until the next October 1st. 2 KnightVision Many faculty store course information in KnightVision. Here you can find information about how to contact your professor, course assignments and more. Access to KnightVision is gained with your Calvin username and KnightVision passphrase. KnightVision is accessible at http://knightvision.calvin.edu Within the KnightVision environment are additional resources, such as access to your online course registration, class schedule and grades and transcripts. These are available to you from the My Resources tab in KnightVision and require an additional login using your KnightVision passphrase. Activating your KnightVision account To activate your KnightVision account, go to http://knightvision.calvin.edu/ and click on the Activate my Account link. You will receive your username and set your KnightVision passphrase during this process. When you set your passphrase for the first time you will be prompted to set a secret question and answer so that when you need to reset your passphrase you can do it yourself without help from CIT. Your KnightVision passphrase is also used for Webmail, Calvin Wireless, and KnightVision Services. Novell Novell accounts are provided to each Calvin student to log in to public lab computers and as a location to store academic and course-related documents on Calvin's network. You can access your Novell accounts by logging in to Novell on campus, and/or via the internet from http://netstorage.calvin.edu When you log in to Novell on a campus computer you have access to the Microsoft Office suite, Adobe products for web page creation, other academic software, and printing. Activating your Novell account You must activate your Novell account before using it for the first time. You will be asked to provide your KnightVision username and passphrase to access the activation page. To start the activation process, go to https://www.calvin.edu/cgibin/novell_pw.pl 3 Calvin e-mail account Webmail is the student e-mail program provided by Calvin. As a Calvin student you are given 90MB of space on Calvin's web server to develop personal web pages and store e-mail. Webmail uses the same username and passphrase as KnightVision, and can be accessed at https://webmail.calvin.edu or through KnightVision. You have been assigned a unique e-mail address which is your username followed by @calvin.edu. This typically is your initials and a number e.g. lpm2@calvin.edu. Access to campus buildings and classrooms (PIN) Some buildings on campus, such as the residence halls and campus apartments, and a few classrooms, have security card-readers to allow access to the building. In some cases you simply pass your Calvin-ID through the card-reader and the door will unlock. In other cases after passing your Calvin-ID through the card-reader the yellow light will blink and you must enter your PIN to unlock the door. Your PIN is available from the Tools menu on the My Calvin tab in KnightVision. How do I connect my personal computer to the Internet? While a student at Calvin, there are two ways to connect your personal computer to the Internet; ResNet and Calvin Wireless. ResNet ResNet is the wired residential computing network provided in the on-campus residence halls and campus apartments. Dorm jacks There are two network jacks in each dorm room and five in each campus apartment (two in large bedroom, two in kitchen, and one in the small bedroom). The network (data) jacks are labeled C through G (A and B are the telephone jacks). If you need to call the HelpDesk about your network jack please know which network jack letter you are plugged into. Registering for ResNet Once you arrive on campus, you can register your personal computer for ResNet. Plug your computer into the network jack on the wall of your room using a CAT5 Apartment jacks 4 Ethernet cable. Open any web browser and you will be automatically directed to the sign-up pages for further instructions. Game consoles Games consoles must be also registered. For instructions please go to http://www.calvin.edu/go/gameconsole Wireless access Calvin provides you with wireless access to the Internet and Calvin's network. Any computer that meets Calvin’s minimum requirements with a wireless network card (see requirements below) can connect to our growing wireless network. There are several locations across campus where wireless access is available, including Johnny's, the DeVos Center and the Hekman Library. Symantec Endpoint is required for ResNet or Calvin Wireless access If you are connecting to the internet via ResNet or Calvin Wireless it is required that you have Symantec Endpoint installed, and that it is set to regularly receive updated virus definitions. Calvin provides Symantec Endpoint to all Calvin students free of charge whether you are connecting to Calvin’s network or not. To download Symantec Endpoint, visit http://www.calvin.edu/cgi-bin/sns/download.pl and log in with your KnightVision username and passphrase. Symantec Endpoint is also available from the ResNet registration web pages. No appointment is necessary, just bring your computer (please bring the power adaptor for laptops). Check for First Aid station hours on the bottom of the ResNet or Calvin Wireless registration pages. If you experience problems connecting after the first week of classes please contact the HelpDesk. Filtered Internet access Your ResNet and Calvin Wireless connection allows you access to almost all information available on the Internet. However, when connecting to the Internet via ResNet or Calvin Wireless, your access is filtered through a program called BESS. There are certain web sites that BESS will not access from the ResNet and Calvin Wireless. Web sites dealing with hate speech and discrimination, murder/suicide, illegal activities, and pornography, for example, are not available. However, in the event that a course requirement would necessitate access to one of those areas, your professor will inform your class on how access will be provided. The computers in the library have no access limitations. Internet access at Calvin College has two main purposes. 1. The first purpose is to support the academic mission of the college by providing convenient access to online academic resources. 2. The second purpose is to provide convenient access to electronic communication and interaction with other students, faculty, friends and family members. These purposes intersect with the college's goal of encouraging a safe community environment that fosters respect for all individuals and encourages compliance with relevant state and federal laws. What technology is available in my dorm or campus apartment room? Network connections There are two network jacks in each dorm room and five in each campus apartment (two in the large bedroom, two in the kitchen, and one in the small bedroom). 6 Telephone service in residence halls and campus apartments There is one telephone and multiple phone jacks in each dorm room and campus apartment. Printing is available to you in most computer labs. When you print to a public or academic lab printer your document will print automatically. However, in an effort to be good stewards of Calvin's technology resources you have been given a printing quota. You are allotted a $30 printing quota for each fall and spring semester which is the equivalent of 600 black and white pages. Summer semester print quota is $15 and interim semester print quota is $10. Charges Black and White $0.05 a page Color $0.35 a page Duplex (2-sided) (where available) $0.08 for a 2-sided page If you go over quota, you will still be able to print. Any printing over the pre-defined quota will be included in your Miscellaneous Charges Statement at the end of the semester. CIT provides you with a tool to monitor your on-campus printing. To check your Print Accounting balance: Windows: Mouse-over the icon in the Windows system tray. (Lower-right corner of the desktop to the left of the current time.) Mac: Click on the printer icon in the Dock. What are the rules for using technology at Calvin? While academic freedom for faculty, staff, and students is very important, it does not permit the violation of Calvin’s Policy on the Responsible Use of Information Technology or violation of the law. 10 Use of information technology resources at Calvin College is a privilege, not a right. Violation of any parts of information technology policies will subject the violator to disciplinary action, which may include any of the following: warnings, loss of access, probation, suspension, or legal prosecution. CIT polices are statements of the behaviors that are expected of all users (e.g., faculty, staff, students, alumni, guests, etc.) of Calvin College information technology resources, and the consequences for failing to comply with the stated expectations. These policies are intended to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, to promote operational efficiencies, to enhance the college's mission, or to reduce institutional risks. As a user of Calvin information technology resources it is your responsibility to be aware of both Calvin's policies on using Calvin's information technologies and federal, state, and local laws that affect your use of technology. As a Christian College, what might be allowed under the law may not be allowed at Calvin. Our policy documents provide information as to what Calvin expects of you, what are your rights and how to report violations. For the Policy on Responsible Use of Technology, consequences for violation of a policy, and how to report a known or suspected violation of the a policy, please go to http://www.calvin.edu/it/itpolicies Can I get discounts on technology purchases? CIT works with various technology vendors to offer you discounts on your personal technology purchases. In order to be eligible for these discounts you must be a current Calvin student or admitted student. Each vendor has their own eligibility criteria. For complete details please see Calvin's personal technology purchase programs at http://www.calvin.edu/it/services/programs The Campus Store also sells computer software at educational prices. Free and legal music downloads Ruckus is an online music downloading service. Calvin has partnered with Ruckus to give every Calvin student using a Windows computer free & legal music downloads from the Ruckus library of over threemillion songs. Movies and television shows can also be downloaded for a fee. 11 Please see http://www.calvin.edu/it/services/ruckus for details. I lost everything! Practicing Safe Computing Keep your information secure Backup your files Because technology can at times prove unreliable, it is important to save your files in more than one location. You should save your files in at least two of the following locations: your personal computer's hard drive your student Novell (NetStorage) account CD-R/CD-RW Burning files to a CD is a good alternative to storing large files. All of our public lab computers have CD burning capabilities. While CD-RW and CD-R CDs have the same capacity, you can only delete files from a CD-RW disc to recover space. Once files have been written to a CD-R disc you cannot remove them. USB Flash drives (a.k.a. thumb drives, memory keys, pen drives) are a fast and easy way of storing your files. They come in various sizes and can be purchased at the Campus store. IMPORTANT: Please note that Calvin no longer supports the use of floppy disks on campus. The HelpDesk no longer has the capabilities to recover lost files from floppy disks. Would you share your toothbrush with me? Would you share your toothbrush with me? Of course not! Then why would you share something as personal as your passphrase? If you share your username and passphrase, you and your personal are put at risk. In addition, you are violating the Policy on Responsible Use of Technology which could result in to disciplinary action, which may include any of the following: warnings, loss of access, probation, suspension, or legal prosecution. A strong, secret passphrase is the best way to prevent others from accessing your IT accounts. Sending e-mail is like sending a postcard to someone...anyone can read it Sending e-mail is like sending a postcard to someone. The mail carrier who picks up the postcard, the person who sorts the mail, the person who delivers the mail and anyone who sees the postcard lying around can read the contents. E-mail is not a secure method of communication. Most of us have no idea how to read an e-mail being sent to 12 someone but, there are a lot of tech savvy people who do and it isn't all that difficult. Someone wanting to steal your identify can simply wait for your e-mail to pass by. That means you shouldn't send confidential information via e-mail. That includes: social security numbers bank account numbers credit card numbers any information that you want to keep confidential Who trashed my computer? Adware, spyware and viruses can all affect the performance and integrity of your computer. There are several steps you can take to protect your computer against these threats. Keep your computer free of spyware and adware Spyware and adware are files that are installed on your computer without your knowledge. They allow companies to monitor your Internet browsing patterns, profile your shopping preferences, send you unlimited pop-up ads, and even install unwanted software on your computer. Some common indicators that your computer has spyware or adware installed on it are: Your homepage resets itself - when you open up your browser, you are taken to a different homepage than the one you specified. Search results and links are distorted - when you click on a link, instead of going where you expect, you are taken to a site different from the one on which you clicked. Numerous and annoying pop up ads displayed Unwanted software installed Browser slows down - pages take longer to load Additional toolbars appear on your browser Most spyware is installed without your knowledge when you click on pop-up ads, download files using peer-to-peer applications (KaZaa, BitTorrent, Limewire, etc.), install free programs, and so on. Being more judicious about what you click on or install on your computer can help you avoid unwanted spyware and adware. Symantec Endpoint has anti-spyware protection already built-in. Congratulations, you’ve just won $100,000 The best way to protect yourself against a system compromise is not to engage in activities which can leave you vulnerable to attacks. For example: 13 Be careful what software you download. Spyware and malware is lurking where you least expect it. Be careful when you download peer-to-peer programs. Many of these programs also install spyware and malware onto your computer without your knowledge or consent. If an e-mail is too good to be true… just delete it. o Be very suspicious of any e-mail from an unknown source, and never download files from an unknown source. o Never download e-mail attachments unless you are certain the sender intended to send you the file. Many e-mail viruses will send copies of themselves to members of an address book, so you may actually know the apparent sender of the message. To be safe, verify with the sender that the message was intended for you before you download the attachment. Never download software from unfamiliar or untrusted sources. Scan any disks you have used in public computers or have shared before using them in another computer. If you use Instant Messaging, do not run programs or follow website links that people send to you. Do not use file sharing software. Downloading and/or sharing copyrighted material is illegal, and many Internet worms are spread through file sharing networks. 14 Student employment at Information Technology A wide variety of technology jobs are available for students interested in working in the Information Technology department. We hire students to work during the school year and during the summer. For a list of positions available and to submit an application, please go to http://www.calvin.edu/it/students/jobs.htm 15 Campus Map 16
