Complete your registration card and enter course selections online. Registration cards are due to your 4th period teacher or Ms. Jarosi in the Guidance office by Feb. 17th. *** Please correct these due dates on your registration card now**** WJHS counselors will return to NBMS on 2/17 to meet with students who have questions about their course selections (you need to check off the box in the upper right hand corner of the registration card to request a meeting). However, due to the snow delays we highly encourage you to reach out to your counselor via email prior to handing your card in. Graduation Requirements Earn a minimum of 22 credits; 28+ required for college prep. Complete a minimum of 75 Student Service Learning hours. Pass all Required Exams. Course Specific Graduation Requirements • • • • • • • • • 4 credits of English 4 credits of Math (incl. Algebra & Geometry) & enrolled in a math course each year in grades 9-12 3 credits of Science (incl. Biology & “physical” science) 3 credits of Social Studies (US History, NSL Government, World History) 1 credit of PE 1 credit of Art 1 credit of Technology Education .5 credit of Health Program Completer (2 credits of Foreign Language, 2 credits of Advanced Technology, College/Career Development Sequence, or Edison HS Career Program) Honors Classes You should consider registering for an Honors class if: - You have a strong interest in the class. - You have good grades in prerequisite classes. - You are motivated to succeed. English Choices • English 9 • ESOL English (continue with next level) • Honors English 9 Social Studies Choices • United States History • ESOL US History (for ESOL 2 & 3) • Honors United States History • AP US Gov’t & Politics w/NSL (consult with your 8th grade history teacher) Math Choices Math classes are taken in sequence: Algebra 1…Geometry…Algebra 2…Precalculus Consider teacher recommendation posted in myMCPS Scheduler If you are earning an “A” or “B” in your current math class, strongly consider the Honors sequence. If you are earning a “C” or lower in your current math class, it is recommended that your speak with your math teacher, counselor, and parents or guardians about the appropriate level of rigor. Science Choices • • • • Honors Matter & Energy (recommended for students taking Algebra 1 or Geometry in 9th grade) ESOL Biology (for ESOL levels 2 & 3) Honors Biology (recommended for students taking Honors Geometry or higher in 9th grade) Honors Chemistry (can only be taken with Honors Biology AND Algebra 2 or higher) Elective Choices After selecting your 4 core courses, you are left to select 3 more courses from the categories below. World Language Competitive colleges would like to see you take at LEAST 2 years of world language while in High School. Classes are taken in sequence. However, if you feel you do not have the ability to move onto the next level, you may opt to repeat your current placement. Please consult with a counselor and your current World Language teacher. You will learn the new scheduling system to sign up for classes in 6 easy steps! http://scheduler.mcpsmd.org/ MyMCPS Scheduler You will enter your own course requests online at home. If you do not have access to a computer and printer at home, please find time to go to the media center. If you have ANY trouble – don’t worry! Just ask your counselor for help. STEP Login: http://scheduler.mcpsmd.org/ Once you see the sign-in screen on the right, enter your MCPS username (your 6 digit MCPS student ID #) and password (the password you use to log into the computers at school). Then select “Sign In.” 1: STEP 2: This is your Grade level specific home screen. You will choose courses from here. STEP 3: Choose your courses by clicking on the pencil icon. Make sure you pick 7 classes. A green check mark shows that a choice has been made or that there is no choice required in that section. A red exclamation mark shows that a selection still needs to be made. HELPFUL HINTS Make sure you check off the course for both semesters. Ex: Algebra 1A and Algebra 1B. Please note that you may need to click through multiple pages in order to find the course you are looking for. STEP 4: When you are finished making all of your choices, make sure it says “Requesting 7 credits hours” at the bottom of the page. Click the “Submit” button on the bottom right. STEP 5: Once you have reviewed your selections, print two copies of the page – one for your records, the other to be attached to your registration sheet. You can sign out of the application using the “Sign Out” link located in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. STEP 6: Make sure your registration sheet is filled out. On your sheet write down two alternate courses. Parent signature is required on this form. Attach your myMCPS Scheduler print out and attach to your blue registration card. You will turn these into your designated teacher. YOU ARE NOW REGISTERED FOR CLASSES FOR NEXT YEAR! Earning High School Credit in Middle School In order to earn high school credit, you must pass BOTH semesters and the semester 2 Final Exam. If you fail one semester, you may regain this credit by attending summer school THIS summer 2016. If you fail the course or do not pass the semester 2 final exam, you will need to repeat the entire course to earn credit. Finally, please remember… Talk with your parents or guardians, teachers, and counselor about your course choices. They know you best! Please have your myMCPS Scheduler courses selections entered and your registration card filled out by February 17th. NB students need to turn registration cards into your 4th period teacher or you can give to Ms. Jarosi in the Guidance Office, by FEBRUARY 17th! Email your WJ counselor if you have questions! After you submit your registration card, you may contact your WJ counselor if you need to make any changes. But please note that any change request must be communicated by the last day of school- June 17, 2016.
