Proposal ID# Course Reviewer_________________ BACCALAUREATE CORE PROPOSAL CHECKLIST SKILLS CATEGORY: WRITING II Please note: All submissions that deal with WRI and WRII must be routed to the Writing Advisory Board, which is composed of the Writing Intensive Curriculum Director, the Director of First Year Writing, the Coordinator of the Writing Center, and a writing faculty member with expertise in technical and professional writing. This Board will consult with faculty to develop and implement proposals that meet Baccalaureate Core criteria. Course clearly states Baccalaureate Core Category Learning Outcomes and lists them distinctly from other course outcomes. If proposing for more than one category, syllabus includes Bacc Core outcomes for all relevant categories. Course has no limiting prerequisites Syllabus includes required texts and materials Syllabus includes grading criteria Syllabus includes course schedule Syllabus includes statement regarding students with disabilities Syllabus includes statement regarding academic or scholarly dishonesty with appropriate URL link Course is at least three credits Criteria and Outcomes Consideration: After reviewing the syllabus and the Baccalaureate Core Question set in the Course Proposal System, please make sure all criteria are met and course includes activities assignments, or measurements aimed at helping students meet learning outcomes. Note problems or questions on the back of this sheet. WRITING II Learning Outcomes 1. Apply multiple theories, concepts, and techniques for creating and evaluating written communication. 2. Write effectively for diverse audiences within a specific area or discipline using appropriate standards and conventions. 3. Apply critical thinking to writing and writing process, including revision. Writing II Rationale and Criteria: Writing II courses shall: A. Be at least 3 credits; B. Emphasize elements of critical thinking; C. Focus on relevant theory, concepts, and techniques for understanding the form of communication involved and for improving skills; D. Provide concepts and guidelines for determining effective communication within a specific area or discipline, including conventions of that field; E. Require significant student practice or performance coupled with evaluation; and F. Encourage appreciation and understanding of language, form, and style. The Skills categories Writing II and Speech provide supervised practice in communication skills and extend the focus to professional communication concerns.
